Time Nick Message 01:20 jonadab Now use the fact that Life is Turing-equivalent, to create an in-game PDP-8 emulator, running on a Life simulation. 03:20 Blockhead256 well hello.. tchncs.de is down for maintenance, so I'm forced onto IRC for now. Not that the matrix bridge is supposed to keep working for much longer.. 14:44 vejou[m] I'm sending this on a watch! 14:46 smolcat are you batman? 14:52 s20 So many people joined so quick :eye: 14:56 ROllerozxa the tchncs.de matrix homeserver seems to be back up now 14:56 s20 Ah, so [m] means matrix? 14:57 ROllerozxa [mmyes] 14:58 s20  16:20 jonadab Blockhead256[m]: Was that you in the Flint Stone Walls thread? (And if so, did you have an opinion on the latest screenshot with the darker mortar? I'm not sure how I feel about it...) 16:22 Blockhead256 jonadab: Yes, my full numbers are 256 where necessary/ambiguous 16:23 Blockhead256 the shiny stones definitely look more like stones.. although flint tends to be rougher I thought - they look quite smooth, almost river stones maybe 16:25 Blockhead256 the dark mortar doesn't work very well. Actuallyat first I thought I was looking at a JPEG with quality 30/100 or something but it's just the noise pattern in the mortar. Also, it doesn't seem like enough contrast 16:25 jonadab Yeah, agree about the look of the stones; I just don't know exactly how to fix it (I'm not a real artist). 16:25 jonadab I could reduce the noise pattern in the mortar, but yeah, maybe I should also lighten it back up some. 16:26 Blockhead256 yes I think you were right to take it down from where it was. But not nearly that far. When working in greyscale, a little bit of change can actually be quite visible in net effect 16:26 jonadab (The mortar and stones are on separate layers in the Gimp file, so it's not very hard to make changes to the mortar, since I'm using the same mortar as background for all of the textures.) 16:27 Blockhead256 if you line 16 shades of grey up in a palette and paint randomly with them, you'll probably struggle, unless you have a good idea, to distinguish adjacent shades in the palette. But if you tried 16 different shades of mortar, they might all have quite a different, memorable effect 16:28 jonadab Yeah, I think I will try something darker than what I originally had, but not nearly as dark as the latest. 16:28 jonadab Thanks for the feedback. 16:28 Blockhead256 no problem 17:20 lissobone We all know the best mods of Minetest, right? 17:20 lissobone But what about the worst mods? 17:21 lissobone Number 1 candidate for (not really the worst, but still bad) mod would likely be https://content.minetest.net/packages/Giga_M/lavagold/ 17:22 lissobone Any other suggestions? 17:23 Blockhead256 https://content.minetest.net/packages/PilzAdam/airsword/ 17:23 Blockhead256 well, at least it's funny 17:26 MTDiscord Air Sword is arguably the best mod ever 17:27 Blockhead256 https://content.minetest.net/packages/jesuistitus/block_chat_messages/ 17:28 Blockhead256 lets players without shout chat, probably doesn't work with any other chat message mod 17:40 lissobone Speaking overly seriously, the Air Sword is an ironic mod (and a pretty good one) and shouldn't be taken into account when looking for worst mods. What we need are mods which are unintentionally of low quality, as if made by a 4-grader on a school break while sitting on a toilet. 17:40 Blockhead256 yes I understand.. but it just feels mean-spirited mostly 17:41 lissobone It feels jelly. 17:41 lissobone Anyways, I'll go make a vape mod by demand of my friend. 18:00 jonadab I expect some folks will disagree with me, but the mods that really annoy me are the ones that provide a hillion jillion single-node-but-larger-than-a-voxel craft-and-place substitutes for stuff that players *should* be building in the world out of blocks. 18:01 jonadab homedecor and its ilk. 18:04 jonadab Oh, and that one that makes nodes that you break drop on the ground even if your inventory isn't full. Why would anyone ever want that? 18:10 Blockhead256 jonadab: what about lrfurn? I think it works fine. Very much agree on homedecor though 18:11 Blockhead256 as for nodes dropping on the ground: It's a gameplay decision. Makes for interesting gameplay sometimes. Mining diamonds is more exciting when they could fall in lava instead of being a guaranteed drop. Spleef is a bit harder since you might destroy the floor and not be able to replcae it.That sort of thing. 18:11 jonadab Blockhead256: The whole genre. Furniture should be made out of blocks and slabs and such. 18:12 jonadab But the worst ones are the ones that make the largest and most complex multi-voxel-single-node objects. 18:12 jonadab I think at one point I saw one that had a to-scale tractor-trailer rig as a craft-and-place object. Yeesh. 18:13 jonadab If they have *functionality* that justifies their existence, then I can sort of see it. e.g. , if it weren't for its egregious performance, advtrains would maybe get a pass. 18:14 MTDiscord Things can only be "best" or "worst" for a specific purpose, not just "in general" (that's just a specific purpose that you're refusing to actually explain and trying to imply everyone should just agree with). 18:15 Blockhead256 worst at "fitting into the voxel aesthetic" I'm guessing 18:28 MTDiscord Makes sense. I "hate" decor mods for that reason, but every now and then I'm working on a game project for MT where that's actually NOT an issue, and those mods work fine for that. 18:28 MTDiscord though, tbh, when it comes to voxel purity, I already pretty much hate stairs and slabs anyway. 18:36 dibesfer[m] Wesh is the way for making voxel furniture 19:30 vejou[m] the message after my watch message doesn't even show on matrix 19:30 vejou[m] maybe this bridge thing is broken 19:32 ROllerozxa the bridge is supposed to be decommissioned soon so probably 19:44 MTDiscord "Broken" is a float, not a bool, and it's somewhat broken. 20:03 vejou[m] fitting metaphor 20:03 vejou[m] nice 23:16 cheapie lissobone: How about worst mod from a security perspective? https://cheapiesystems.com/git/das/ 23:20 cheapie Worse than that /might/ be possible, but it's hard to compete with "lets everyone on the server read from/write to/change settings on/brick your hard drive as a feature". May want to limit use to singleplayer :P 23:21 cheapie re: homedecor - I like the idea of the mod, and I use stuff from it a _lot_, but the art style isn't even close to matching anything else in the game. 23:30 MTDiscord If you just let everyone run passwordless sudo commands, it'd probably be worse. In theory anyone could do the same things eventually by messing with your hard drives low-level, but a lot fewer would bother with the extra steps. 23:31 MTDiscord Sometimes for security to be REALLY bad it's not enough to just allow anyone to do anything they want, you have to actually encourage them to. 23:36 cheapie (later) "so this new version of vm16 runs way faster, and also you can program it in amd64 assembly instead of its own thing now" "oh, you sped up the emulation?" "no, it just runs it on the server as root"
