16:17 MTDiscord        <warr1024> On Matrix, IRC users and bots look like they are each in the room with you.  The Discord bot makes IRC and Matrix users look like individual bots on the Discord side but to IRC and Matrix it looks like a single bot.
16:18 Warr1024         Some of us are on IRC too, it's just a little more convenient to talk via discord when we are already using discord to talk elsewhere too.
16:33 mmuller          yeah, I believe it has to do with the way the gateway is implemented.  In IRC connections and users are 1:1, so if a gateway wants to do IRC "correctly" it has to open a new connection for every user.
16:34 jonadab          I'm not sure the IRC network operators would care for a bot that did things that way.
16:34 mmuller          I'm pretty sure that's how the matrix gateway is implemented, actually.  AFAIK, the only other way is to have your node be a peer in the IRC network.
16:35 jonadab          If your other-protocol network is at all large, that would be the actual correct way to do it, I think.  Technically speaking.

16:37 jonadab          Sooner or later somebody's going to put out a decent well-designed publicly documented open protocol for chat networks with modern features (like account registration and images) baked in.
