Time Nick Message 02:13 Sokomine erlehmann: yes, i logged to stdout as well (though at first with print). sadly it doesn't work if the server forbids client-side mods 02:16 erlehmann Sokomine server forbidding client side mods is an antifeature anyway. that mod is for waspsaliva (a cheat client focused on building). 02:16 erlehmann i can recommend it! 02:18 Sokomine i've heard about such mods. i just see not much point in it. i don't want a script to play the game for me. i just want to be able to read chat messages with more comfort 02:50 Sokomine erlehmann: i logged to actionstream for now. that works with one additional line (so there's a good chance to keep that over future updates) but it also duplicates each line in chat now. will have to check 11:19 CWz_ I dislike the Google Play too many ad supported shenanigans 11:19 MTDiscord f-droid time 11:22 MTDiscord I really hope the new developments in regards to minetest's android dependencies situation will mean that there will be a 5.5.0 in f-droid this time 11:22 CWz_ Nah, google needs to tell these app masters, to either Remove the Ads and charge for the app, make a pro version, or GTFO. 11:24 celeron55 why would google do that, they profit from the ads probably more than the app publishers 11:24 MTDiscord google is literally an advertisement company, don't expect much from them ¯_(ツ)_/¯ 11:28 definitelya It all sstarts at the old adage of "Hey, why not charge people for our service, instead of forcing intrusive ads in their faces?". 11:28 definitelya *starts 11:28 definitelya That goes for all advertising networks ofc. 11:28 definitelya Too bad the standard is the ads now, no going back. 11:32 CWz_ Yeah i suppose Google is too possessed by the 'skewered S' devil whispering in their ears. 11:34 definitelya I build minetest from source on Android too, who needs the Play Store. 11:34 MTDiscord you have to also keep in mind a sizable chunk of mobile gamers are kids who don't have any way to pay for apps 11:36 CWz_ it wouldn't be as bad if the ads didn't constantly flash up randomly while trying to do something. 11:37 definitelya Sublayer Plank Yep, gather round poor people, Big Tech is YOUR Robin Hood... right? 11:37 definitelya xD 11:51 MTDiscord nah, chelpuS is MY robin hood :P 11:53 MTDiscord the current mobile game landscape is honestly super depressing... and I don't even know if it even was better back in the day 11:54 MTDiscord It was better back when there was only Snake on a Nokia or Brick Breaker on a Blackberry. 11:55 MTDiscord well I was more talking about early android, up until 2012-2013 something 11:56 MTDiscord back then most mobile games would come in two versions, a LITE version and a full version. LITE version is free but either limited or ad supported, full version costed a bit but was the full game, one-time payment for the full game 11:57 MTDiscord if we go back all the way to MIDP java games (which is a bit before my time) it was actually not all that better, beyond pre-installed ones 12:00 MTDiscord the fact they had to be limited to 64kb for wide compatibility probably made it a bit more limited but there were intrusive ads even then 13:57 erlehmann luatic just wants to go back, back to 1999 13:58 erlehmann “no wonder the first matrix movie is set in 1999. it was the last good backup they had, before shit got weird.” 14:42 jason1234 is there a free, libre minetest server, without registration? 14:43 jason1234 minetest sucks with registration, totally. 14:44 jason1234 there are no free world servers? 14:51 jason1234 hey miniontoby what is the ip of your minetest server? 14:55 sfan5 registration? you mean like choosing a password? 15:55 erlehmann the oysterity anarchy server (mineclonia) has christmas chests and snowpeople at spawn https://mister-muffin.de/p/hQCl.png 15:56 erlehmann and i kinda wonder why some of the chests render this weird … like that you can see the bedrock through them. anyone has an idea what setting/bug can cause this? 15:57 MTDiscord do you have texture filtering enabled? 15:57 MTDiscord looks like it's trying to blend transparent pixels that are outside of the actual model 15:58 erlehmann i did not make the screenshot, but thanks for the hint! 15:59 MTDiscord yeah the textures look a bit blurry so I'd assume texture filtering is enabled... a bit heretical for pixely textures but who am I to judge 15:59 MTDiscord It's caused by using use_texture_alpha=blend instead of =clip 16:00 MTDiscord Possibly if it's an older version of MT that only has =true and doesn't support distinguishing... 16:01 MTDiscord Filtering CAN be made to look decent, but it requires some tuning, and the mod creator needs to have configured things correctly to start with. 16:29 yaman Regarding the 2021 Game Jam, is it possible to choose reviews in a way other than the "majority unhelpful" metric? It seems that only the top few games' reviews are actually marked as helpful/unhelpful, leading to some strange results. For example, at the time that I'm writing this, Invector only has 2 qualifying reviews. Looking at the reviews on my own game (Alter), I see that many thoughtful reviews are controversial in terms of the helpful/ 16:29 yaman unhelpfuls. My suggestions for fixing this problem are the following: 16:30 yaman 1. Judges vote on or select reviews that are thoughtful from each game. 16:30 yaman 2. All reviews are accepted by a minimum non-spam word count. 16:31 MTDiscord lol, that discussion is moving here now 16:31 MTDiscord but yeah, the whole review and meta review thing is a mess 16:36 MTDiscord It's a mess but we also are trying not to double-count judge opinions. There's already a majority score influence from judges, and if judges then meta-judge the community side of things, it's going to be like not making good on our promise to let the community have a voice... 16:37 Krock (I'm doing my part) 16:38 MTDiscord The cleanest and least controversial way to deal with people being disingenuous with the community reviews is to have MORE honest reviewers. 16:39 MTDiscord To be fair the need for more honest reviews in general is not in any way limited to the jam. 16:51 yaman The effort of a review reviewer to, at least temporarily, invalidate a well-written review is too low in my opinion. I don't think the judges will double count their opinions by selecting thoughtful reviews as I assume reviews will be selected for quality, not opinions. However, this may be too much to ask judges to do given the large number of games submitted. 16:55 yaman I need to go for now. I wanted to voice my concerns and I hope the organizers can find a solution that works for everyone. 17:05 cheapie Huh, apparently Minetest _does_ run on Haiku. 17:05 cheapie I was getting like 1 FPS, but a good portion of that probably has to do with me running it on a potato that doesn't do much more than that on Linux... 20:57 Fixer_ hold on... this looks familiar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8bIMuLDxiw 20:59 MTDiscord https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff5uWPvtbQg same video but not from a robotic content farm 21:00 MTDiscord oh no wait 21:00 MTDiscord no 21:00 MTDiscord it wasn't this one, there was another way longer video showcasing the same thing 21:01 MTDiscord yes, it was this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnC1WFUq-Bg 21:26 frostsnow I'm looking to dynamically register tools in a mod, but it looks like the 'register_tool' function needs to be run at load time. It's not practical to pre-register the tools at load time due to the sheer number of registrations that would be required. Running 'override_item' also seems to be a load-time operation. Is there any way to force-update or add tool registrations at run-time? 21:31 sfan5 there is not 21:31 sfan5 depending on what you need you may be able to make it work anyway 21:35 MTDiscord you can change tool capabilities via meta 21:35 MTDiscord *at run time 21:36 frostsnow Well, I just tested 'override_item' and it looks like the actual attributes can be effected (according to logs; will need to verify in action). So far it looks like I've have to create some kind of object factory that pre-registers a certain number of items which are overridden at run-time and also stores & loads item registrations. So player-visible metadata will update only on server restart, but 21:36 frostsnow the item will behave properly. 21:36 frostsnow (Actually it might update on player re-connect) 21:37 frostsnow Jonathan: Not sure what 'meta' means in this context. 21:37 sfan5 question is: what exactly do you need to have different between tools? 21:37 frostsnow It's essentially an enchantment system 21:38 MTDiscord https://github.com/Anarios/return-youtube-dislike 21:38 MTDiscord wrong link 21:38 MTDiscord https://github.com/minetest/minetest/commit/a637107a4e81be88938d68df4deae50e68cf2cd8 21:40 MTDiscord if i recall correctly mineclon* uses itemstack meta to keep registrations down and make them dynamic 21:44 frostsnow Thanks, I'll play around with that 21:44 MTDiscord you can also change the items description with that key 21:46 MTDiscord itemstack:get_meta():set_string("description", "new description") 21:46 MTDiscord if you use hardware coloring you can also change the items coloring dynamically 21:47 MTDiscord You can't swap in an entirely different texture by any chance, can you? :-) 21:47 MTDiscord you can to a degree, using hardware coloring layers 21:47 MTDiscord its very limiting 21:50 MTDiscord Yeah, I'd really love to be able to fade in a specific image overlay or something, sounds like that's a no, though. 21:50 MTDiscord you are the core dev ;P 21:50 frostsnow I won't need to change the texture, thankfully :) 22:00 frostsnow Nice, that seems to work, thanks! 23:51 yaman I suddenly ended the conversation earlier about the review system, sorry about that. But once again, I would like to bring up that the "majority unhelpful" metric is encouraging strange behavior. For example, I saw that StarNinjas posted reviews on a few games, all in the same format. By the time I finished reading his review on my game and watching the video, it already had 2 "unhelpful" votes, while his other reviews were left untouched or 23:51 yaman marked as helpful. 23:55 MTDiscord Very strange 23:56 MTDiscord I think people mostly use those to say i agree/disagree with the review (as mentioned earlier elsewhere) 23:57 MTDiscord But it shouldn't be that
