I saw a whole line of those rainbow colored blocks followed by a single cat block thingie. 16:57 Teckla (If I recall correctly) 16:59 Calinou JohnnyComeL8ly, only underground 16:59 Calinou by default 16:59 Calinou (for unknown reasons, probably so that they are even harder to find) 16:59 Calinou JohnnyComeL8ly, 04did you say color? 16:59 Teckla Or perhaps I don't know what you guys are talking about :P 17:00 Calinou 08Microsoft 07Works 0997 17:01 JohnnyComeL8ly That's the irony... MS doesn't work...(as in, it doesn't Excel). :-D 17:02 JohnnyComeL8ly Teckla: Yeah, that's what I was talking about.... 17:03 Teckla JohnnyComeL8ly: OK, in this case, yep, I came across one 17:03 Teckla My daughter had to explain to me that the line of rainbow blocks was its flying trail or something. 17:03 Teckla (I dunno what a Nyan cat is.) 17:03 JohnnyComeL8ly Yay, point for Teckla! 17:03 JohnnyComeL8ly ;-) 17:03 Teckla My daughter loves Minetest 17:03 Teckla :) 17:04 JohnnyComeL8ly Well, at least it doesn't cost you... 17:04 JohnnyComeL8ly like some other game.... 17:04 Teckla We both have Minecraft too, heh. Each has its pros and cons 17:05 JohnnyComeL8ly One being speed.... 17:05 Calinou Minecraft is faster than Minetest 17:05 Calinou but Minecraft subjugates its users, whereas Minetest empowers them. 17:05 Teckla Ya? Other than start up time, I haven't noticed a big performance difference between the two 17:05 Xenoth Calinou: I cannot run Minecraft on its lowest settings on my laptop. Minetest runs at a good 25FPS. 17:05 Calinou Xenoth, on any decently fast PC, Minecraft 1.8/1.9 will largely beat Minetest 17:05 Calinou they optimized the client a lot 17:06 Calinou and Minetest got slower too... the server part is rather bloated now 17:06 Xenoth Ah, I only ever played older MC. 17:06 JohnnyComeL8ly I guess I'm in the same boat.... 17:07 JohnnyComeL8ly Well, I'd rather be 3empowered! 17:07 Teckla Before mods, Minecraft vanilla is probably more interesting than Minetest. (At least, that's what my daughter tells me) 17:07 rubenwardy Teckla, Minetest is meant to be modded 17:07 JohnnyComeL8ly lol 17:08 rubenwardy whereas Minecraft isn't 17:08 Teckla Yep, I have no problem with that, just reporting what my daughter tells me :) 17:08 rubenwardy ie: we want you to play with mods 17:08 rubenwardy whereas MC is happy for you to play without mods 17:08 JohnnyComeL8ly Most will just take a surface look and judge after that. 17:08 Calinou we try to make minetest_game as enjoyable as possible 17:08 rubenwardy I disagree with this philosophy however 17:08 Calinou but people keep viewing it as bare Fedora 17:09 Calinou (it's often said that nobody uses Fedora as-is, and that everyone uses RPMFusion, no matter how bad it might be) 17:09 Calinou likewise, many Minetest mods are really of poor quality, but we can't stop people from using them :) 17:09 Calinou (specifically, I wish mods were more... modular) 17:09 Teckla If you want to capture the "it just works" / "kids" market, fleshing about vanilla Minetest with animals, villages, villagers, Mesecons, etc. would go quite a long way. 17:09 Calinou I agree about mobs, but it's been years we want a mobs mod that doesn't suck 17:10 Teckla s/fleshing about/fleshing out/ 17:10 Calinou we need someone to make an entirely new mob API, not using simple_mobs 17:10 Teckla Calinou: Ah, just waiting for the right mobs mod to come along, eh? 17:10 Calinou with a small set of mobs that has consistent looks, and good balance 17:10 Calinou yes mostly 17:10 Teckla Ah. 17:10 Calinou if the mod is good, it has high chances of being merged to minetest_game really 17:10 Calinou simple_mobs isn't suitable, it has too many bugs 17:10 JohnnyComeL8ly Ooh.... 17:10 Calinou like mobs not jumping when they should, or them sticking on ceilings 17:11 Calinou (happens frequently with Carbone Mobs, my fork, and no idea how to fix it) 17:11 JohnnyComeL8ly Ow... 17:11 Teckla My daughter has been pestering me to write some Minetest mods. (I'm a Java software developer by day... please don't hate me) 17:11 Teckla I guess I'd need to learn Lua 17:11 troller write java vm on lua 17:11 JohnnyComeL8ly Java just isn't C/C++ but it isn't evil.... :-P 17:12 Teckla troller: haha 17:12 Teckla Before Java, I programmed C for ... many decades :) 17:12 Robert_Zenz Teckla, as also a Java developer, I can tell you, it is easy. But you have to give up your neat little objects for the most part. 17:13 rubenwardy http://rubenwardy.com/minetest_modding_book/ 17:13 Teckla Robert_Zenz: It looks like Lua's tables let you construct ad hoc objects pretty easily 17:13 JohnnyComeL8ly That is way too impractical... a script language making a vm for another script language. 17:13 rubenwardy is obviously the best guide 17:13 Teckla rubenwardy: Thank you, I'll check that out 17:14 Robert_Zenz Teckla, yeah, kinda. it is not exactly the same, but quite close. 17:15 * Teckla was pretty amazed when he discovered Minetest and how good it is 17:16 Robert_Zenz Teckla, if you want some code to read, you could look into my utils mod, I tried my best to keep it easily readable: https://github.com/RobertZenz/minetest-australopithecus-utils 17:16 Teckla VanessaE may in fact be my daughter's first non-family role model :) 17:16 Teckla Robert_Zenz: Thanks! 17:16 Zaitabai Finally, some resources. Thanks guys. 17:24 CWz VanessaE is role model 17:24 JohnnyComeL8ly Yeah. 17:25 JohnnyComeL8ly rubenwardy: The docs look very helpful... I downloaded them to my webserver for reference. (Thanks for the mentioning.) 17:26 Teckla Currently my daughter is having a blast with the Mesecons mod I installed yesterday 17:26 Teckla She lured me into a Mesecons-powered trap 17:26 Teckla And she built an elaborate house using VanessaE's home decor mod 17:27 JohnnyComeL8ly Oh, did you just use /home ? 17:27 Teckla You Minetest devs and modders really do rock. :) 17:27 Teckla JohnnyComeL8ly: Never used that command, heh. 17:28 JohnnyComeL8ly Teckla: /sethome makes /home usable. 17:37 Teckla JohnnyComeL8ly: Ah, thanks 17:38 JohnnyComeL8ly Teckla: No problem. 17:43 JohnnyComeL8ly Hello, kaeza. 17:44 kaeza greetings 17:45 kaeza rubenwardy: around? 17:45 rubenwardy yep 17:51 JohnnyComeL8ly Quick Q for y'all... I am on OSX 10.10.5 (Yosemite). I downloaded and installed minetest. no problem. It seems to run fine. But I cannot seem to install the tutorial properly. I first installed per the directions to $HOME/.minetest, but it was not picked up. So I moved the tutorial directory to games/ in the app. That seems to be f 20:11 j0el I was not sure where to put the tutorial_world so I created a world in the game and found it in /Users/jberman/Library/Application Support/minetest/worlds and put it there. Seems to work fine, but was wondering if I am making too hard or if the instructions need to be updated. Anyway, thanks for what looks to be an amazing game. 20:17 STHGOM that sound like a good way to do it 20:18 STHGOM that worked, right? 20:19 STHGOM i think .minetest would be hidden, btw 20:41 j0el Yes, it worked fine. and .minetest is hidden, but not that hidden.
