Time Nick Message 01:13 thefamilygrog66 What's the deal with all the illegitimate minetest clones for android? 01:14 FreeFull No idea 01:14 FreeFull Alternative to minecraft pocket edition? 01:14 thefamilygrog66 Sure, but anyone can download the "official" minetest android app for free. 01:15 thefamilygrog66 For example, a player on my server is using an app called Exploration. It's been downloaded 10000 times from google play, at $3.99 a download. 01:17 thefamilygrog66 $40000 for putting a release of minetest on google play is pretty f**kin' shady, man. 01:22 FreeFull Oh, yeah, that's bad 01:22 FreeFull You could force them to release the source code 01:26 troller what? 01:27 troller Exploration lite - not minetest 01:28 thefamilygrog66 not lite, full version 01:28 thefamilygrog66 and it is indeed minetest 01:30 troller https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explorationbase.Exploration this ? 01:32 thefamilygrog66 Yes, I believe that's the one. 01:33 troller its not mt 01:33 troller https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=open.org.minetest.hungry - this - is 01:34 thefamilygrog66 Ah yes, you're correct. I love the first review: "This game is so stuped" 01:35 troller lol they use my old mandelbox world in one of games 8) 01:35 thefamilygrog66 nice 01:35 troller https://lh4.ggpht.com/QEwcQU5o1F56OjfAY6lxWKf8VX_Uj86xRrkCNa_u_E5VXNUYNe20VpWd-AjRyOxk7Mbh=h900-rw 01:35 troller and this screenshot from it 01:35 thefamilygrog66 I'm assuming it's apps like these that assign users the generic "Guest3209" type names? 01:36 troller its my feature too ;) 01:36 troller it was in some versions of mt, but then was partailly removed 01:36 thefamilygrog66 the Guest thing? 01:37 troller yep 01:37 troller hate me! 01:37 thefamilygrog66 Ah, as a server owner, I'm always wary of players who log on with Guest names... haha 01:37 thefamilygrog66 May as well sign in as "Griefer1234" 01:38 Zeno` It's got good reviews 01:38 troller it was autofilled when player leave empty "name" 01:38 thefamilygrog66 Grr 01:40 troller fuuck looot of ads 01:41 troller video ads 8( 01:41 thefamilygrog66 gotta make more money 01:41 nejni-marji if !$name; then name = Robert\' rm -rf / 02:00 Fritigern So...... I edited the no_guests mod to respond to guest accounts with "INVALID CLIENT VERSION. Visit http://minetest.net and update your client!!!" 02:03 Fritigern Now let's see how many android users are going to actually get the official android client. 02:04 nejni-marji Why, is there an unofficial one? 02:04 Fritigern I think you know exactly what i mean 02:09 nejni-marji Wait... I think I do... 02:17 slavic hi 03:06 FreeFull How do evil pickaxes compare to diamond? 03:07 FreeFull It takes quite a lot of gold to make one 03:07 Fritigern Ah, but Evil picks are super fast! 03:07 FreeFull 28 gold ingots 03:07 FreeFull So, worth it then? 03:07 exio4 28 gold ingots makes anything not worth it 03:08 exio4 oh look, it is a Zeno` 03:08 FreeFull At least it doesn't use rainbow blocks 03:08 exio4 lol 03:08 Zeno` look, look, a zeno! 03:08 exio4 how is it going wild minetester! 03:08 FreeFull I never even found a single rainbow block in the wild. Ever. 03:08 Zeno` I've found two 03:09 Zeno` ghastly things 03:09 FreeFull I think I'll go hunt for gold 03:09 exio4 it is sad that I don't really play much :( 03:09 FreeFull I think someone else found a rainbow block once, and I got to see it 03:09 FreeFull I used to play more too 03:09 Zeno` I protected on in the public mine on onez' server 03:09 Zeno` one* 03:09 FreeFull I really like a place I build locally out of sandstone 03:09 FreeFull Although I have trouble with thinking how to use rooms 03:10 FreeFull I think I'll make one into a dual kitchen/bar 03:10 FreeFull It's a watershed world 03:10 FreeFull With homedecor mod 03:10 FreeFull And some others 03:20 OldCoder http://oldcoder.org/141127_ores.png 03:20 OldCoder ^ What is wrong with my ores? 03:20 OldCoder See screenshot 03:20 FreeFull I hope I can find some gold.. It's pretty difficult to find 03:21 FreeFull OldCoder: That's a long-standing bug 03:21 FreeFull To do with texture size differences 03:22 OldCoder Why is it occurring for me and others? and what differences? What shall I do as a workaround? 03:23 OldCoder FreeFull, ^ thank you 03:23 jacksepticeye Hi OldCoder 03:23 OldCoder Shall I load 64x64 textures? But what triggers the bug? 03:23 OldCoder jack Hi not now 03:24 jacksepticeye What why do you always do that to me. 03:24 OldCoder Always as in twice in the last hour, Jack? 03:24 jacksepticeye I have a reason why i rage quit 03:24 OldCoder Both times when you were interrupting? 03:24 OldCoder That is good to know 03:25 OldCoder FreeFull, or others, why is the texture size mismatch bug occurring; i.e., what triggers it? Shall I load 64x64 ore textures? 03:25 jacksepticeye Thats it im Never coming on moon test again Never 03:26 FreeFull If only there was wood ore.. 03:26 OldCoder Petrified wood might be ore FreeFull 03:27 OldCoder FreeFull, further comments? If not, thank you 03:28 FreeFull No further comments 03:33 DFeniks im not completely sure . but ore and stone textures should be same size to avoid that . i think 03:49 OldCoder DFeniks, that is what I was thinking 03:49 OldCoder I thought they were the same size but I was probably mistaken 03:49 OldCoder FreeFull, your initial remark was appreciated; see me if you need minor assistance in the future 03:56 FreeFull Ok 04:19 Inocudom The folks that make all those rip-off apps for Android and such depend upon and feed off of the ignorance of others. I view that as immoral. 04:19 galundrux_ Well, moral people don't make any money now do they :P 04:20 galundrux_ Not that I'm arguing, I'm just as broke as anyone 04:20 Inocudom Of course, a number of those apps are freeware, but they tend to be abandoned for eternity by their placers. 04:21 Inocudom Austerity is the way of the future. That is what the powers that be want. Ever seen Hunger Games? 04:23 galundrux_ It's still not half as bad as that "security expert" that went out and said all flashlight apps are spyware, thats really playing on peoples ignorance, not to mention fear. 04:24 OldCoder FreeFull, DFeniks; syncing texture sizes corrected the issue 04:25 OldCoder Inocudom, is Farming++ working for you? 04:26 galundrux_ Anyway, I was wondering why so many people log onto servers as guest? Is there anyway to stop that? 04:29 galundrux_ Oh, and I need to get rid of bones to, they're cluttering up the place, is the only way to delete the folder? And will that remove the bones that are already there? 04:33 Mallot1 Hey 04:33 galundrux_ Hey 04:34 Mallot1 Why are there 8 item slots now? I just dropped by at the site and noticed the change. Also what happened to the cool website now it's all white. 04:34 Mallot1 hi galundrux_: =D 04:35 Inocudom Yes, it works in singleplayer map. How about on your server? 04:38 Inocudom OldCoder, is the server using the latest version of Minetest? Farming++ might need it. Also, you might want to report any errors to MTDad so that they can be fixed. 04:40 OldCoder You will need to find the errors for me Inocudom :-) as you requested this. And yes it is a very new copy. Sapier branch from a few days ago. 04:40 domtron_ galundrux_: by deleting a mod folder all nodes in the world defined by it will remain in the world by my experience. The nodes will loose their texture and default to the "missing texture" texture. I'm not positive though. 04:40 OldCoder Inocudom, does it seem to work? 04:40 Mallot1 domtron_: you are correct 04:40 OldCoder domtron_, as a general rule yes 04:40 OldCoder Ninja 04:41 OldCoder You can then use one of two mods to delete or convert the nodes 04:41 OldCoder OR you can alias them; 3 alternatives 04:41 OldCoder This works in most cases. Stairsplus stuff is a bit ugly but basic blocks work this way. 04:42 FreeFull Be aware, all items inside the bones will be lost once you get rid of the nodes 04:42 FreeFull So better get the items out first 04:44 galundrux_ That's okay, doesn't seem to be much in them anyway, and there are hundreds so I'm not gonna bother with that. Thanks though. 04:44 domtron_ galundrux: you might want to keep bones and just shorten/add the delete abm so they don't cause the clutter. 04:45 domtron_ I mean if you want to keep bones. 04:45 Inocudom OldCoder: I don't know what you mean by Sapiers branch. What is it of? 04:46 OldCoder We are working on the Resend Reliable Total Death Bug 04:46 OldCoder He rebased a few days ago 04:47 OldCoder Branch is of his fork of master 04:47 OldCoder So it is pretty current; less than a week old 04:47 galundrux_ Yeah, I'm gonna have to work it out tomorrow I think, it's late here so my brain isn't really working :P 04:51 Inocudom This branch, OldCoder? https://github.com/sapier/minetest 04:53 domtron galundrux_: I just looked at the code. It already uses the on_timer event to make the bones lootable by anyone after a set period. Another if statement could be added to delete the bones a little while after that has happened. 04:54 Inocudom sapier, how up-to-date is this branch? https://github.com/sapier/minetest 04:56 galundrux_ Great, thanks, I'll look into that after I get some sleep 04:57 RealBadAngel This branch is 191 commits behind minetest:master 04:59 OldCoder commit 016448331061f87a63b8f9ef33671d81e8922ad1 04:59 OldCoder Author: RealBadAngel 04:59 OldCoder Date: Fri Nov 21 08:41:21 2014 +0100 04:59 OldCoder Port createForsythOptimizedMesh from Irrlicht 1.8 04:59 OldCoder 04:59 OldCoder Mesh rotation helpers. 04:59 OldCoder I think my copy is up to date 04:59 OldCoder Looking for the branch ID 04:59 domtron Glad to try and help. Sleep well. 04:59 OldCoder I am so tired... 05:00 OldCoder I don't see the link but it is current through last weekend 05:00 RealBadAngel OldCoder, that 191 behind applies to sapier's branch 05:00 OldCoder Yes; but I have a branch from him that he said he'd rebased 05:01 OldCoder And this was just a few days ago 05:01 OldCoder It was not his default 05:01 OldCoder I think Zeno, he, and I have finally fixed the network issue 05:01 OldCoder He has made performance fixes 05:01 OldCoder He says are important 05:01 OldCoder I am preparing a patch now to review 05:02 RealBadAngel good 05:03 RealBadAngel this weekend i will push another important change, move highlighted and cracks to seperate scene node, without the need to rebuild meshes all the time 05:03 RealBadAngel that will make gameplay smoother 05:06 OldCoder git checkout -b reliable_timeout_fix origin/reliable_timeout_fix 05:06 OldCoder That is Sapier's branch 05:06 OldCoder and I am tweaking a copy right now 05:11 waressearcher2 is anyone here ? 05:11 waressearcher2 does minetest uses voxel engine ? 05:13 waressearcher2 hey bunch of lunatics 05:13 domtron Minetest is a voxel game engine. 05:14 waressearcher2 for example there is voxelstein, its a clone of wolfenstein3D, does minetest use similar technology ? voxels ? 05:18 OldCoder Define voxel 05:19 OldCoder RealBadAngel, I will do one more test pass with changes I just made. I think this needs to go into 0.4.11 05:19 waressearcher2 anyone ? 05:20 OldCoder Define voxel 05:20 OldCoder For your purposes 05:20 waressearcher2 I don't know I though voxel is a tiny 3d pixel 05:21 waressearcher2 so every block is a voxel, its not 3d block with texture internally its just one point but it rendered as block ? 05:21 RealBadAngel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voxel 05:21 OldCoder If you are standing block, or cube 05:21 OldCoder I want to know his definition 05:21 OldCoder waressearcher2, what is it you are after? 05:21 RealBadAngel is google so hard to use? 05:22 waressearcher2 also there are "freeminer" and "voxelands", they were forked from minetest, are they better ? why don't those people just help developing minetest instead of creating another fork ? 05:23 OldCoder settings->setDefault ("connection_timeout" , "30.0" ); 05:23 RealBadAngel why dont we have a single game in the world? so everybody will develop just one and play the it? :P 05:23 OldCoder g_settings->getFloat ("connection_timeout"), 05:23 OldCoder settings->setDefault ("connection_timeout" , "30.0" ); 05:23 OldCoder RealBadAngel, should I use the 2nd with the 1st? 05:23 OldCoder Says no default found at runtime 05:23 waressearcher2 is there a way I can help ? I know some C and have spare time 05:23 OldCoder waressearcher2, sure 05:24 OldCoder What are your interests? 05:24 RealBadAngel just take a look around, pick something you would like to improve and try 05:24 OldCoder RealBadAngel, should I use the 2nd with the 1st? Says no default found at runtime 05:24 RealBadAngel OldCoder, i think you should 05:24 OldCoder BUt 05:24 OldCoder Says no default found at runtime 05:24 OldCoder Is it sufficient to add the 2nd in defaultsettings.cpp ? 05:24 domtron waressearcher2: Forks occur because people want to add features that the core developers don't want because it conflicts with their goles or are too unstable/slow/ect for the majority of players. 05:25 RealBadAngel OldCoder, yes 05:25 OldCoder ERROR[main]: ERROR: An unhandled exception occurred: Setting [connection_timeout] not found. 05:25 DFeniks im not sure if it counts as voxel game if ve have also meshes and plantlike things 05:25 OldCoder RealBadAngel, I have not worked in this area and am tired physically 05:25 OldCoder It is basically voxels 05:25 RealBadAngel if something is not defined in config, defaultsettings.cpp defines it 05:25 OldCoder RealBadAngel, comments on the error message? 05:25 RealBadAngel it is also responsible for creating the keys 05:25 OldCoder Keys? 05:26 RealBadAngel "connection_timeout" is the key 05:26 RealBadAngel variable name 05:26 OldCoder Never mind... I see my error thank you 05:26 RealBadAngel "30.0" is a default value for the key 05:26 RealBadAngel and will be used if not defined in config 05:27 DFeniks also each cube has texture . its not like its simply colored point 05:27 domtron DFeniks: I have seen 7 days to die called a voxel game despite having a lot of meshes(full car models, ect). 05:27 waressearcher2 RealBadAngel: on that page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voxel there is a list of voxel-based games and there is no minetest 05:28 RealBadAngel feel free to add it there then :) 05:28 OldCoder waressearcher2, It is a very nice game 05:29 OldCoder Possibly one of the best little-known FOSS projects 05:30 OldCoder waressearcher2, do you wish to visit some of the worlds? 05:30 DFeniks Free Open Sandbox Simulator ? 05:31 OldCoder :D 05:31 OldCoder You know I mean the other FOSS 05:31 domtron One can't expect every list to be exhaustive. Also 'technically' Minetest isn't a game it is an engine which can run voxel based games. Games are available on the forums. An example is Adventuretest. 05:32 DFeniks or something else, gona google abbreviation then 05:34 DFeniks ah , of course Free and open-source software . 05:44 domtron good night 05:46 Inocudom 00:09:12: ERROR[ServerThread]: Assignment to undeclared global "itemstacks" inside a function at ...st/bin/../games/minetest_game/mods/default/functions.lua:312. 05:46 Inocudom That error appeared in minetest_game today... twice... 05:47 OldCoder Inocudom, that is not necessarily an error; it is sometimes carelessness 05:47 OldCoder People need to check for loaded mods 05:48 OldCoder I have started to patch to fix those messages 05:48 OldCoder Hopefully the patches will be accepted 05:48 OldCoder Hm, but in default; that should not happen 05:48 kaeza Inocudom, prefixing the line with `local` fixes the error 05:48 OldCoder waressearcher2, explain what interests you 05:48 OldCoder kaeza, hieza 05:48 * OldCoder rests 05:48 kaeza (should be fixed upstream, though) 05:48 kaeza OldCoder, o/ 05:49 OldCoder kaeza, I think Sapier and I are nearly done with part of a network overhaul; one part 05:49 OldCoder Performance is supposed to be much better for poorer devices 05:49 Inocudom OldCoder: This is the only error that I could find in farming++: 00:16:13: ERROR[ServerThread]: Assignment to undeclared global "node" inside a function at ...ek/.minetest/mods/farming_plusplus/farming_plus/init.lua:81. 05:49 kaeza OldCoder, good :) 05:49 OldCoder Inocudom, yes, I'll fix that one myself 05:49 OldCoder Zzz 05:50 Inocudom I once replaced farming_plus and farming_redo with farming++ in a world once, and there were no crashes. 05:51 Inocudom However, I did notice that wheat does not grow on farming_sand, even though all of the other plants will. 06:05 Fritigern it's so much fun seeing this in my logs : "22:01:31: ACTION[ServerThread]: Server: Player with the name "Guest5167" tried to connect from 138.229.206.130 but it was disallowed for the following reason: INVALID CLIENT VERSION!!!Visit http://minetest.net/download#android and update your client." 06:05 Fritigern Hashtag: #littlewhitelies 06:08 Fritigern Here's another one: "21:57:15: ACTION[ServerThread]: Server: Player with the name "Admin" tried to connect from 93.217.191.37 but it was disallowed for the following reason: Another user with that name is already logged on.Please choose a different username and try again." 06:10 VanessaE heh 06:15 Fritigern I mmodified the responses in the no_guests mod. I only wish i could have done that in a config/ini file though. But this works! Maybe i shold commit a patch for it? :-) 06:17 VanessaE such a thing would be trivial to patch, yes 06:19 Fritigern BTW, i have finally figured out how to create a diff patch. (yay me!) I came across meld in my "start menu" and out of curiosity started it. 06:19 Fritigern Next step: learning how to apply a diff patch! 06:21 Fritigern Oh, btw, i expanded no_guests with the code from another mod. I don;t remember what it was called (sorry, whoever whote the thing), but it makes it so that if Billy tries to log in as billy (or bILLY), that user then gets told that there is already a user called Billy and if they meant to log in as that 06:23 Fritigern Dangit, i wish i had added accreditation in the comments..... 06:26 VanessaE that's ShadowNinja's code, probably 06:26 VanessaE he did a case-insensitive patch, which I also use 06:33 Fritigern I don;t think many people would mind if it were merged in with no_guests. It's practically copy-paste-done 06:35 Fritigern I mean, if i manage to plop it into no_guests, then anyone can do it :-) 06:35 VanessaE heh 06:38 Fritigern VanessaE: This is the mod as i currently have it : http://paste.kde.org/pslpodwtb 06:39 VanessaE ShadowNinja's mod has a choosecase command also 06:39 VanessaE I'm sure I'm screwing that up but you get the idea 06:40 Fritigern Off-topic: sudo apt-get install vice 06:40 Fritigern You know what i mean ;-) 06:40 VanessaE heh 06:41 * VanessaE looks over her poor C128 that never gets turned on anymore 06:41 * Fritigern had a C128D and a C128DCR, never had a regular 128 06:42 VanessaE I've had a couple -DCR's in the past, still have the motherboard from at least one (might have both, I forget). 06:42 VanessaE this flat 128 has been pretty reliable 06:44 Fritigern The major difference between the D and the DCR is the vram (forgot what the C128 video chip was called, it wasn;t VIC becasue that was C64) 06:44 VanessaE nope. 06:44 Fritigern And poop. I forgot that vice also needs roms 06:45 VanessaE the major difference is that the -DCR is a single board combining the drive controller and the computer into one unit, with different characteristics for the drive than is found in a standard 1571 (plus the VDC RAM :) ) 06:46 VanessaE the -D is more or less just a flat 128 board and 1571 put into one case. 06:46 Fritigern OKay, i give you that. The D was two boards, but the major difference foor the end users was the VDC which was 16K for the D and 64k for the DCR 06:46 Fritigern *for 06:46 VanessaE yup, pretty much 06:47 Fritigern BTW, ever tried Lunix? 06:47 VanessaE my flat has a 64 kB RAM board in it. 06:47 VanessaE yeah, didn't find it too useful 06:47 Fritigern Seems like development of Lunix has continued since i last played with it MANY years ago 06:48 VanessaE oh? 06:48 VanessaE morning, LazyJ 06:48 Fritigern Aparrantly, you can use Lunix to zset up a webserver, and more. 06:48 Fritigern Hold on, let me look it up 06:49 LazyJ G'evening/morning/tea time to you too. ;)- 06:50 VanessaE http://lng.sourceforge.net/ 06:50 VanessaE still pretty old, but that's certainly newer than I remember 06:50 VanessaE heh 06:51 Fritigern Yup, that was what i was looking for! I got stuck at http://hld.c64.org/poldi/lunix/lun_about.html 06:52 Fritigern This shows that the C64 is THEE best computer ever built: "Preemptive multitasking (up to 32 tasks, 7 priorities)" 06:52 VanessaE heh 06:52 VanessaE hard to imagine people are still trying to push those things to such extents 06:52 Fritigern Considering that the Motorola 6502/6510 is not built for multitasking, this is definitely a huge accomplishment 06:52 VanessaE s/Motorola/MOS/ 06:55 VanessaE (well, "still" is somewhat relative, since the last version of that OS was 10 years ago) 06:56 Fritigern Okay, well. How's this. There are still demos made for the C64 06:56 VanessaE yup 06:57 VanessaE ok, time for me to head off. 06:57 VanessaE night :) 06:57 Fritigern Twilight is still at it, Censor, Farlight, and more 06:57 Zeno` night 06:57 Fritigern Oh, okay. *WAVES* 06:57 Zeno` Isn't it Fairlight? 06:58 Fritigern Yes it is, confounded typos! 06:58 Zeno` lucky I was here! 06:58 Fritigern IKKER! 06:59 Fritigern (it's how i pronounce IKR) 07:00 Zeno` haha :) 07:01 * Fritigern is watching a C64 demo from 2013 on Youtube and feels tempted to find really really early demos :-) 07:01 LazyJ These "undeclared globals" that are now spamming ingame chat, is there a way to shift that to just appear in the logs? Players freak-out when they see frequent "ERROR" messages. 07:02 Fritigern They could update their mods. And if there are no updates, they can nag the modders that made them 07:03 LazyJ That doesn't help. 07:04 LazyJ Some mods are very old and not maintained. 07:04 LazyJ Not all modders will bother. 07:04 LazyJ Minetest will gain the reputation of being quite error prone. 07:04 Fritigern Hmmm... I could have a swing at updating some of them. Without the promise of maintaining them beyond this update 07:05 LazyJ These are frustrations coming from a server-op who actually interacts with the players on the server. 07:07 Fritigern I interact with my players too. And they have no idea of the uninitialized globals thing 07:08 Fritigern BTW, they should not be seeing it in the chat. Dunny why this hapopens to you, but it does not happen on my server 09:08 kahrl http://sprunge.us/ICMO 09:24 Zeno` I can answer those questions 09:25 Zeno` lol 09:25 Zeno` did you say "yes, it's called minetest"? 09:39 Megaf Hi everyone 09:39 Megaf Zeno`: LazyJ: Please do a top and tell me how much RAM your server is using 09:40 LazyJ A top? How's that done? 09:40 LazyJ Do you mean htop? 09:40 nyuszika7h just type "top" in a terminal 09:40 nyuszika7h htop works too 09:40 nyuszika7h even better 09:40 LazyJ 590/4096mb 09:42 Megaf yep, Im not the only one with the memory leak then 09:42 Megaf LazyJ: minetestserver is using lots and lots of ram 09:42 Zeno` Megaf, let me login 09:42 Megaf it wasnt like that couple of months ago 09:42 LazyJ Oh my memory has leaked for years. Comes with old age, young fellow. 09:42 Megaf Zeno`: See? ^ 09:43 Zeno` 2230m 397m 54m S 17.0 19.4 106:28.75 minetestserver 09:43 Megaf Zeno`: can you devs please stop blaming my server and do something about it? 09:43 LazyJ That was an "age" joke. 09:43 Zeno` Megaf, I am *trying* to track it down 09:43 Zeno` I want it fixed as well ;) 09:43 LazyJ Hehehe... so I'm not the only one not in a good mood tonight. ;)- 09:43 LazyJ Or AM on this side of the globe. 09:44 Zeno` I've been concentrating on the (apparent) client leak but I'll change my priority to the server 09:44 Megaf Zeno`: you are only one, there are several minetest devs that could help you and do a great work. But it seems like you are the only one interested in fixing stuff =/ 09:44 Megaf LazyJ: I'm furious with minetest 09:44 Zeno` I dunno if that's true :p 09:44 Megaf It's no longer crashing, but now it's using lots of ram for nothing 09:45 LazyJ Well, it all done by volunteer work. Front-lines to development. Easy to forget that. 09:45 Megaf Yes, it caches data and stuff, but there is a timeout, and after the timeout memory are not becoming free again 09:45 Zeno` It's not an easy bug to track down (well, the client one isn't) 09:46 Megaf Zeno`: I will keep running my server because now I know that you are actually working on it. As a work around I will increase swap and RAM to 1 GB each and reduce my timeout to unload items 09:47 Megaf free -m on my server without minetest server running http://paste.debian.net/plain/133920 09:48 Zeno` I'll do a bunch of checks and profiling on the server. Let's hope it's not as hard to track down as the apparent client leak 09:50 Megaf Zeno`: 70 MB being used by the server just after starting up http://paste.debian.net/plain/133921 09:50 Megaf 17 MB to 88 Mb 09:50 Megaf firefox uses less memory than that for doing nothing 09:51 Megaf windows xp uses less memory than that for doing nothing 09:51 Megaf Linux Kernel uses way less memory than that... 09:56 DFeniks actually im curious i dont know that much about inner workings of software , but why modern software use so much ram? i mean entire minetest could fit in that much ram many times over 09:56 Megaf Zeno`: I believe it has become stable now, without anyone joining it's stable at 87 MB of memory use, http://paste.debian.net/plain/133923 09:57 Megaf DFeniks: The truth is, devs are becoming lazy, 09:57 Megaf DFeniks: back in the day RAM was expensive and dev had to work hard to optimize their software 09:57 Megaf a good example of a well done game is Quake III 09:57 Zeno` I don't think we're lazy 09:58 Megaf it can run with filterings, settings on max and in full HD, 1920x1080 with 256 MB of ram on a 600 MHz ARM CPU, Raspberry Pi 09:58 Zeno` And I am trying hard to optimize :P (and done a good job so far!) 09:58 Zeno` But so far I've been concentrating on client 09:58 Zeno` I will be turning to server optimisation next 09:58 Megaf Minetest is way simpler than it and yet can't run properly with 4 GB of ram and dual core 1,3 GHz x86_64 CPU 09:59 exio4 Megaf: the devs try to get something done without having to throw everything off 09:59 exio4 because the last option is practically a 2 years work 09:59 Megaf DFeniks: dev used to even write pieces of code in assembly to get the best performance possible 09:59 Megaf and they would hunt bugs down 10:00 Megaf now a days software is released incomplete 10:00 Megaf see PS4 and XBox One games 10:00 Megaf you buy one, go home to play and have to wait several minutes, or hours, updating it 10:00 Zeno` so I have a 20% improvement in the draw loop 10:00 Zeno` oops, wrong window 10:01 sol_invictus Megaf: that's a comfortable position you are in. why don't you help the devs? 10:02 sol_invictus or is it more productive to whine here and demand stability? 10:03 Megaf sol_invictus: I can not code. So I'm reporting everything I can and testing any solution they can offer 10:03 Megaf sol_invictus: And I'm only acting like this because I'm fed up being polite and being ignored 10:03 Megaf So I have decided to make some noise and you know what? It might work. 10:04 Zeno` I'm not ignoring you 10:04 exio4 minetest has a lots of bugs, and not enough people who can spend their whole days debugging and stuff, based on the fact that people don't have infinite free time, I guess we're actually kinda nice 10:04 Zeno` But I, personally, only have so many hours in a day to devote to this 10:04 Zeno` and the other devs probably less (because I recently became unemployed, unlike them, I have a bit more time) 10:05 Megaf exio4: I know, I understand that. Problem is, they waste their time and people throwing in lots of new features, shaders, changing default game behaviour. INSTEAD OF HUNTING/FIXING BUGS AND OPTIMIZING THE CODE AND CLEANING OLD CODE. 10:05 Zeno` I have not added ONE NEW FEATURE 10:05 Zeno` All I've done so far is... optimise 10:06 Zeno` and clean up 10:06 Zeno` see refactor_main and refactor_the_game 10:06 DFeniks i guess its better to have game as it is (and trying to improve if people with right skills join in) rather that give up and dont have game at all 10:06 Megaf exio4: Zeno` is the only active dev that I see actually working on improving things, even before he was invited to join the team 10:06 Megaf before him sapier used to do some stuff 10:07 Zeno` And this is this afternoon's effort: http://i.imgur.com/nK41xkP.jpg 10:07 Zeno` Granted, most of my stuff so far has been to the client, but I'm at about the limit of that (without going silly) 10:07 Megaf Zeno`: Please, when I'm making a critic to minetest devs I'm not talking about you, you are doing a great work and I'm extremely thankful for that 10:07 Zeno` So I will turn to the server either tomorrow or in the next few days 10:07 Zeno` I am exempt? hehh :D 10:08 exio4 Megaf: is your critic against people who did a lot of stuff before, but because they have a life to take care of, they can't do much now? 10:10 Megaf exio4: my critic is against people throwing new features before fixing existing bugs 10:10 Megaf sapier is one dev that I saw doing great work and now he can no longer contribute as much as he used to 10:11 exio4 tell me how what new features, most new features I saw weren't written by the coredevs 10:48 Megaf Can anyone confirm this issue please? https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/1878 10:50 sol_invictus I had this in fm, so yeah. 11:41 Megaf LazyJ: So, are you able to confirm this? https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/1880 11:41 Megaf !title 11:41 MinetestBot Megaf: minetestserver will keep consumig RAM till it uses all available RAM and SWAP. · Issue #1880 · minetest/minetest · GitHub 11:42 LazyJ Megaf, we are still running 0.4.10 from about a month after the version update. 11:43 LazyJ Back in August or September...
