Where can I find the fire mod? Having a hard time. XD |
01:30 |
Uberi |
it's built into Minetest now |
01:30 |
xiong |
I'm coming to realize I picked a very poor site for my first mine. I worked hard down to 50 with little to show for it besides coal and iron... and not so much of that. With some effort I built a sapling farm on 50 in anticipation of going deeper and building a wood farm on, oh, maybe 100; at that time I had only built stairs, no ladders, and I wanted a forward base. |
01:30 |
Uberi |
well it's part of minetest_game, at least |
01:31 |
Uberi |
xiong: keep digging |
01:31 |
Uberi |
at least 64 deep if you want any MESE at all |
01:32 |
xiong |
Now I've widened my surface explorations and I've found extensive cavern systems at 10 and 20, some with rich veins of iron and copper; some crammed with coal. These require almost no digging; I just light them up and throw a few stairs in. |
01:33 |
xiong |
Yes, Uberi, I realize I need to go much deeper eventually. But it's a logistics issue, even though I misjudged it at first. |
01:33 |
tjbarber |
ah Uberi thanks. I'm trying to set up the firearms mod in the OS X port |

01:36 |

I'm only coming in now to complain loudly (not for any practical purpose) about my bad fortune and my poor judgement in picking a barren location for my first mine... and in sticking with it so long, when much more productive stuff was and is much easier to get at. |

Right now I'm on 20, in a cave positively reeking with minerals. It will take me days to mine it all out, never going below 20. |
01:37 |
Uberi |
what about diamonds and other ones that only appear really deep? |
01:37 |
xiong |
No, it's not mese, it's not gold; but otoh it's not lava either. No effort required. And this will give me plenty of bronze tools with which to make a serious descent. |
01:39 |
xiong |
The game is coming into focus for me; there's a core set of tech needed, basically bronze tools, tree farms, and furnace/chest camps. |
01:40 |
Uberi |
what mods are you using? |
01:40 |
xiong |
I busted into my first lava cavern this weekend and did not handle it well. Dunno even what can be done. |
01:40 |
xiong |
No mods. |
01:40 |
thefamilygrog66 |
don't forget lava lamps, xiong... |
01:40 |
xiong |
? |
01:40 |
Uberi |
xiong: use water buckets to rapidly clear out lava lakes |
01:40 |
thefamilygrog66 |
oh, no mods - never mind |
01:41 |
xiong |
I have some sketchy lava plans but unsure how to proceed. Not asking for help yet, thanks. |
01:41 |
thefamilygrog66 |
yeah, water and lava create stone/cobble |
01:41 |
xiong |
Yeh right. I had exactly two water buckets with me at the time; I lost one and stupidly tried to get it back. |
01:41 |
thefamilygrog66 |
d'oh |
01:42 |
xiong |
This was not a lava lake so much as a lava cascade -- not a mere, erm, lavafall but a torrent. |
01:42 |
xiong |
Probably should have looked at it, posted a sign, and gone back for many more buckets... or left it. |
01:43 |
xiong |
My plan is to return eventually, use the GPS to find out exactly where it is, then go to the surface and work down to the top. I think I'm correct in thinking I'll hit lava source that way. |
01:43 |
Uberi |
gps? |
01:43 |
xiong |
F5. Somebody finally tipped me. |
01:44 |
xiong |
Yet another undocumented feature. Highly useful. I employed it to join up a couple of my major workings... in the process of which I hit the lava. |
01:45 |
Uberi |
oh the debug display |
01:45 |
xiong |
The payoff being that instead of twisty turny passages, all different; I have straight tunnels and ladders going in useful directions. |
01:46 |
xiong |
Now I can see the grand design more clearly: A grid of tunnels and ladders at predictable depths along which I can move myself and my goods from one place to another and access various workings. |
01:47 |
xiong |
Meanwhile I've decided, for entertainment, to build a glass and brick house. Castle Xiong, the little stone cottage, is starting to seem... mean. |

02:03 |
thefamilygrog66 |

Okay, I will have to push beyond 0.4.6 then. I'm way too conservative a guy to just blindly install nightly; and I'm unlikely to recompile frequently -- rather avoid make/build if I can. Is there any sane point past 0.4.6? |

If one had a circular conception of time, one would not employ a Gregorian date. |
02:45 |

02:45 |
Uberi |
or perhaps the message is automatically generated |
02:46 |
thefamilygrog66 |
I would guess it's automatically generated, yeah |
02:46 |
xiong |
I agree that preindustrial society conceived of time as cyclic; linear time is an industrial concept. |
02:46 |
Uberi |
more like a Stoicist concept |
02:47 |
thefamilygrog66 |
At any rate, I just logged on and was the only player online - I'd guess the date is incorrect. |
02:47 |
xiong |
Both concepts have deep roots but it is industry, with its demonstrated effect on society, that has forced the linear concept to dominate. It is impossible for one now to believe that one's sons can live as one's father did. |

Uberi |
say, why is fall_bobbing_amount disabled by default? it adds a lot of realism to player movement |
02:49 |
xiong |
Not sure what point you're trying to make. The ancient model of time comprised many cycles of differing lengths. |
02:49 |
Uberi |
what if the cycle lasted the entire span of the universe? |
02:49 |
xiong |
Wheels within wheels. |
02:49 |
Uberi |
of course, it would be impossible to tell from within the universe |
02:51 |
xiong |
The cyclical concept denies the possibility of long-term change. The notion that the universe will end in a Big Crunch followed by another Big Bang (and, by implication, was preceded by another cycle, etc.) is atavistic, intellectual comfort food. |

Uberi |

and if you care about babaric treatment of animals in such a world...think about minecraft. i saw a video where the animals got hit by the player, took fire and then died. it's pretty brutal...combined with child-like animals |

03:36 |
thefamilygrog66 |
sheep not so much |
03:36 |

oh yes. i'd love to see goats. the area ought to be great for them! lots of hills to climb around |
03:37 |

hope someone does a model eventually. also rabbits and squirrels would be fine. they're smaller animals and would appear more realistic than large animals (easier for them to change direction) |

nowerdays, you don't have to worry if you spell something wrong. there are loads of native speakers who don't have a clue about their written language either and where it hurts to try to decipher what they might have had in mind in forum posts |

'bout time |
22:43 |
codedevil |
why it shows it's braced tooth [||||] ? looks like crossover between sheep, duck and darth vader |
22:43 |
VanessaE |
codedevil: I'm sure new textures are welcome |
22:43 |
VanessaE |
if you can do it, then do it :) |
22:43 |
codedevil |
can I kill sheep? |
22:43 |
Uberi |
only if your ethics allow it |
22:43 |
codedevil |
well I hit it and nothing |
22:44 |
Uberi |
got any screenshots VanessaE? |
22:44 |
Uberi |
I won't be seeing any bumpmapping myself until my next PC upgrade |
22:44 |

yeah, hang on |

nature mod ;-) |
22:45 |
sapier |
I don't use nature mod because of it's infinite growth |
22:45 |
Uberi |
I used nature mod for a while and made the mistake of going AFK |
22:45 |
Uberi |
the trees set an ambush for me |

on ground there are some samplings, and walking over them is not picking them up |
22:46 |
Uberi |
aw now you're just showin' off |
22:46 |
VanessaE |
you asked for screenies :) |
22:47 |
VanessaE |
codedevil: click them. |
22:47 |
VanessaE |
dropped items don't automatically pick up |
22:47 |
Uberi |
you know, I was kind of on the fence about the aesthetics of HD texpacks before |
22:47 |
Uberi |
but bumpmapping fixed that |
22:47 |
VanessaE |
hehe |
22:47 |
codedevil |
uhhh... how to make the crafting box? not 2x2 wood plank? |
22:47 |
Uberi |
codedevil: no crafting box |
22:47 |
Uberi |
just press i to open inventory |
22:47 |
Uberi |
it's already 3x3 |
22:47 |
sapier |
maybe it's time to think about adding a "high details" mode to minetest ;-) |
22:48 |
codedevil |
well indeed.. k |
22:48 |
Uberi |
codedevil: if you like though, there are mods that can change a lot of things to be like Minecraft |
22:48 |
Uberi |
for example, https://github.com/PilzAdam/item_drop makes items pick up when you walk near them |
22:48 |
codedevil |
how do I mine sheep |
22:48 |
codedevil |
:| |
22:48 |
sapier |
"mine"? |
22:49 |
VanessaE |
he probably wants to pick them u\ |
22:49 |
VanessaE |
up* |
22:49 |
Uberi |
yeah you know just extracting that Mutton Ore from them |
22:49 |
sapier |
if you use mobf for sheep you need a lasso to catch em and scissors to get wool from them |
22:49 |
VanessaE |
Uberi: but that's dangerous stuff, worse than trilithium resin! |
22:49 |
sapier |
mobf == animals modpack base |
22:50 |
Uberi |
dangerous indeed, but doubly delicious |
22:50 |
VanessaE |
lol |
22:50 |
Uberi |
"sheep should have a 10% chance of exploding when you hit them" <= I know a good idea when I see one |
22:51 |
VanessaE |
haha |
22:51 |
FreeFull |
How hard should they explode? |
22:52 |
Uberi |
well a 100 block radius should work for a start |
22:52 |
FreeFull |
How about |
22:52 |
FreeFull |
500 blocks |
22:52 |
Uberi |
even better! |
22:52 |
Kacey |
310000 blocks! |
22:52 |
Uberi |
and 50% of the time they should drop a full stack of diamond blocks for no reason |
22:53 |
FreeFull |
20% of the time they should morph into another animal |
22:53 |
Uberi |
I guess they eat carbon and poop diamonds |
22:53 |
codedevil |
so there are no mobs that will attack me in night? |
22:53 |
* codedevil |
would like some challanging game |
22:55 |

Remember DMs? |
22:55 |
codedevil |
? |
22:55 |
Uberi |
codedevil: you'll see :) |
22:55 |
Uberi |
oh and don't walk outside too much at night |
22:56 |
Uberi |
it's a bad neighborhood out there |
22:56 |
codedevil |
so far its a boring neighborhood |
22:56 |
codedevil |
just an ostrich I killed with sword |
22:57 |
Uberi |
codedevil: wait which mod are you using again? |
22:57 |
Uberi |
for mobs I mean |
22:57 |
codedevil |
animals_modpack-2.1.2 |
22:57 |
codedevil |
moreblocks |
22:57 |
codedevil |
neko259-nature-7666ae41b5dd |
22:58 |
Uberi |
in that case, look out for DMs underground |
22:59 |
codedevil |
is there mod with DM on land? can they be used both? |
22:59 |
Uberi |
one moment |
23:00 |
Uberi |
see any vombies around? |
23:00 |
Uberi |
is it nighttime in game? |
23:00 |
Uberi |
btw VanessaE I am having trouble reproducing the issue |
23:00 |
Uberi |
rotating my 3D printer seems to work fine |
23:01 |
codedevil |
are there biomes or just the gras land? |
23:01 |
Uberi |
codedevil: yep, there's grass, desert, mountanous |
23:01 |
VanessaE |
huh. |
23:01 |
Uberi |
oceanic, etc. |
23:01 |
VanessaE |
Uberi: I'll check it again later, unless maybe your copy is out of date ;) |
23:02 |
Uberi |
my version is the definition of bleeding edge :P |
23:02 |
Uberi |
codedevil: in any case vombies will spawn anywhere that's dark at night |
23:03 |
codedevil |
from which mod? |
23:03 |
Uberi |
codedevil: mobf |
23:03 |
Uberi |
they look sorta like zombies |
23:03 |
Uberi |
they'll be walking around outside at night |
23:04 |
Uberi |
that's the most common aboveground one at least |
23:04 |

wtf? |

ok, WHICH file was it then? |
23:05 |

aren't you using pngs? |
23:05 |
VanessaE |
no, in HDX most are jpg since the engine supports it. |
23:05 |
Uberi |
whoa jpgs are supported? |
23:05 |
VanessaE |
or they're SUPPOSED to be :-/ |
23:05 |

you can script it |

I am halfway done the script already anyways |

kaeza |
Uberi, dafuq is that |
23:11 |

23:11 |

it's code that goes through every jpg in the script folder and checks the magic bytes for corruption |
23:11 |
Uberi |
oh I forgot the recursive flag |

nvm, ignore the code |

23:32 |
VanessaE |
nope. |
23:32 |
VanessaE |
I won't go above 512. |
23:32 |
PilzAdam |
why? |
23:32 |
Uberi |
no, the highest resolution is 4294967296 |
23:32 |
PilzAdam |
ultra HD is fun |
23:32 |
VanessaE |
because anything higher truly is overkill |
23:32 |
VanessaE |
plus my machine couldn't handle it anyway :P |
23:33 |
Uberi |
every texture is 55340232221128654848 bytes |
23:33 |
VanessaE |
heh |
23:34 |
Uberi |
this is assuming 24bit color, of course, with no padding |
23:35 |
khonkhortisan |
You can store extra bits per pixel and hide stuff in the image |
23:35 |
Uberi |
the parity of each byte could store a bit of data |
23:36 |
Uberi |
the encrypted data would appear as uniform noise, making it difficult to identify |
23:36 |
Uberi |
but not impossible |
23:37 |
VanessaE |
or just sero out every byte's LSb and use those bits to store the data |
23:37 |
VanessaE |
zero* |
23:37 |
VanessaE |
s/byte/pixel/ |
23:37 |
Uberi |
that works too |
23:37 |
Uberi |
but you store 3x less data |
23:37 |
Uberi |
if by pixel rather than by byte |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
so use the least bit of each pixel's color component |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
encrypt the data, store it, no one would be the wiser |
23:39 |
Uberi |
but statistical analysis shows that your image has uniformly random data in the LSB of each byte |
23:39 |
VanessaE |
good point |
23:39 |
VanessaE |
of course, most images would have that anyway |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
you could salt it maybe |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
or alternate between the lowest bit and the second-lowest by some defined formula |
23:40 |
Uberi |
nah, lots of images have normal distributions for those sorts of things |
