01:11 AlabamaHit Hey guys. I had the mods (mobs_animal mobs_monster mobs_redo) I removed the folders rebooted server got a lot of unknown nodes now (to be expected) But It seems like they are still spawning..
01:12 AlabamaHit Does that sound possible or it is just that many left to try to kill?
01:13 AlabamaHit And is there a faster way to remove all the unknown blocks? I tried the mod "remove_unknown" but it just crashes minetest.

02:44 AntumDeluge I actually think I found what I was looking for with rubenwardy's Minetest Modding Book: https://rubenwardy.com/minetest_modding_book/lua_api.html. But thank you behalebabo. I should have looked there first. I was thinking that didn't cover the "player" object.
02:46 behalebabo yeah, players are just referred to as a certain kind of ObjectRef

07:33 Hijiri you could build an area with high places
07:33 Hijiri or use worldedit to set areas to a solid node
07:34 Hijiri flat mapgen doesn't have any built-in support for high places since its purpose is to be flat

16:01 Nige hi all, I have a semi technical modding question if anyone can help..
16:01 Nige i need to perform an action on all connected players every few (maybe 3-5) seconds
16:02 Nige is it better to use a counter inside a minetest.onstep or to get the code to call itself with minetest.after ?
16:02 Nige which one is more reliable/ less lag inducing?
16:04 calcul0n i'd say minetest.after if you don't need exact timing
16:05 Nige yeah, i was leaning that way, I have several mods that are already using counters in minetest.onsteps and was loathe to add another ;-)

16:06 FriendlyMine Hello, does anyone have any recommendations on how to find people to help build a gaming community for the game?
16:08 calcul0n FriendlyMine, maybe try the forum ?
16:08 calcul0n or find some general gaming forum
16:10 FriendlyMine calcul0n I se I will try to put it in the forum and see if I get any hits from there. Thanks for giving me a few ideas on this. :)
16:14 ThomasMonroe FriendlyMine you might want to try discord
16:15 FriendlyMine ThomasMonroe On what discord servers though? Many of them are bonded to an existing network (like a game server they made) and thus don't allow these activites.
16:15 ThomasMonroe cant you make youre own?
16:16 FriendlyMine ThomasMonroe True but how would I get people to come on in it? Like add one to the forum post itself? Or what are you saying?
16:16 ThomasMonroe mention it in the forums, but only in the right spot
16:17 ThomasMonroe but beware, many people use IRC as their main chat

16:19 tm3 hi :)
16:19 ThomasMonroe hi
16:20 tm3 any one knows how to get a light source value from a node in minetest lua code. i mean let's say default:meselamp has light_source=14 and how i retrieve it in code for that node (i.e., default:meselamp)
16:21 FriendlyMine ThomasMonroe I understand so is my gaming community venture falls under this forum sectionhttps://forum.minetest.net/viewforum.php?f=14  or where should I be putting it?
16:22 ThomasMonroe yes it probably should go there
16:22 tm3 yes but irc is a good way to communicate live so i am asking but i will ask in forum too :)
16:22 ThomasMonroe tm3 i'll ask tenplus1 for you if thats ok
16:22 tm3 ok :)
16:22 tm3 thanks :)
16:23 FriendlyMine ThomasMonroe Alright thank you, let me see how this community views what I think are important unlike that "other" game...
16:23 tm3 it's esp. needed when cutting of those blocks for some purpose etc. like in circular saw. you have to specify the light source of those nodes. It would be nice if there was a method to retrieve that property of that node or else the value should be zero :)
16:23 ThomasMonroe ok
16:24 ThomasMonroe tm3 its this ling of code
16:24 ThomasMonroe minetest.get_node_light(pos)
16:24 tm3 but it's not that it's get the light at that position in a time of day
16:24 calcul0n tm3, registered_nodes["default:meselamp"].light_source
16:24 tm3 uh
16:25 tm3 do that work??
16:25 calcul0n it does :)
16:25 tm3 thanks :)
16:25 calcul0n tm3, wait, it's minetest.registered_nodes[...]
16:26 tm3 oh yes ofcourse :)
16:26 tm3 registered_node is a method you need the object to call that method :)
16:27 tm3 thanks a lot for that i will try to do this :)

17:40 false_chicken Hey everyone. I was trying to start a server today and noticed that the minetest-server package is not in the stable ubuntu ppa. Instead it installed 0.4.13 from the default ubuntu repos. Do I launch the server with some command line switch using the minetest binary now or something? The documentation still says minetestserver is the binary to launch.
17:44 LazyJ joined #minetest
17:48 false_chicken Oh wait its --server using the minetest binary? Ah. I was following the linux instructions on the Setting Up A Server page that says use minetestserver.
17:49 calcul0n false_chicken, 0.4.13 is quite old, maybe you should compile a more recent one
17:49 red-001 joined #minetest
17:49 calcul0n i also heard the latest is available on some ppa, but i don't know which one
17:50 false_chicken The stable PPA provided by the minetest team has 0.4.16. Its just that I was not using it because the minetest-server package doesnt exist anymore.
17:50 calcul0n ha ok
17:50 false_chicken Which the Starting A Server page on the wiki says to use. I figured it out now. Just install the main minetest package from the PPA and use the --server switch. Thanks though.
17:51 false_chicken Just need some documentation update. xD
17:52 sfan5 it would be better if the minetest-server package existed though
17:52 sfan5 since installing "minetest" will pull in parts of the graphics stack
17:53 tm3 hey calcul0n thanks man :) it's working now. One problem though default mods nodes are working fine for that but not special mods like say caverealms glow crystals :( it's error saying attempting to index nil value ;P

17:58 false_chicken Another quick question. The minetest-server package read the minetest.conf file from /etc/minetest but the minetest binary does not read this and does not create it in the ~/.minetest directory?
17:58 false_chicken How do I go about generating it?
18:00 false_chicken Oh wait. find found /usr/share/minetest/games/minetest_game/minetest.conf. Ill check that out.
18:00 VanessaE you just create a new file.
18:00 VanessaE add some settings
18:00 VanessaE nothing more.
18:01 VanessaE any ordinary text editor will do.
18:01 false_chicken Oh. I didnt wanna miss some settings I didnt know about.

18:01 VanessaE minetest.conf.example may help
18:01 fengshaun joined #minetest

18:06 false_chicken VanessaE, Thanks. That one was specifically for minetest_game but there is one thats gzipped in /usr/share/doc/minetest that seems to have all the settings. Ill try that.
18:07 VanessaE minetest.conf.example should govern most of your server-wide settings, whether mt_game-based or not.
18:07 VanessaE er, should contain; .conf should govern :P
18:08 false_chicken The one that was included in the /usr/share/minetest/games/minetest_game seemed to be missing some key settings like motd and abm range. It was all settings for fire and tnt and such.
18:09 VanessaE ah, yeah I was referring to the one that comes with the engine.
18:09 false_chicken But the one included in the man pages directory seems to have EVERYTHING. Oh man its overwhelming xD. But much better to me than starting with nothing. Thank you.
