13:20 AndDT Calinou: iirc you had an experience with building AppImages?
13:21 Calinou AndDT: yes
13:21 Calinou some slightly old AppImages are available here, https://archive.hugo.pro/minetest/
13:21 Calinou should work on anything newer than Ubuntu 14.04
13:21 AndDT Did you use the binreloc?
13:22 Calinou binreloc?
13:22 Calinou no, I didn't edit the binary
13:22 Calinou so it gives warnings when starting it
13:22 Calinou but you can ignore them
13:23 AndDT ok
13:24 AndDT I just don't have spare disk space for my games, so I decided to build AppImages of them
13:26 AndDT So I tell configure to use /shar as datadir, then I sed -e "s:/shar/bzflag:share/bzflag:" -i usr/bin/bzflag (for example)
13:26 AndDT configure didn't allow me to set non-absolute paths
13:27 AndDT I patched it so now it allows, but when building process came to an end and it started to link binaries, libtool said that "I can't link binaries with non-absolute paths"

14:44 rdococ I would like a node to keep its metadata when obtained...
14:45 DS-minetest rdococ: since you can set itemstack meta, it's not that difficult
14:45 rdococ true
14:45 DS-minetest add a on_dig function and co.
14:45 rdococ will I have to create my own itemstack entity?
14:45 DS-minetest no
14:46 rdococ I mean LuaEntitySAO, not register_entity
14:46 DS-minetest i mean item
14:46 rdococ ah...
14:46 rdococ okay...
14:46 DS-minetest why add an extra entity?!
14:46 DS-minetest ¿
14:47 rdococ I didn't mean adding an extra entity to the game, I meant that... nevemrin
14:47 rdococ nevermind
14:47 DS-minetest ok
14:47 rdococ should I use minetest.node_dig?
14:48 DS-minetest i think so
14:48 rdococ it doesn't seem to show the itemstack
14:49 rdococ do I need access to the itemstack?
14:49 DS-minetest on_dig = func(pos, node, digger)
14:50 DS-minetest you have to add an item to the inventory
14:50 rdococ ah
14:50 DS-minetest https://github.com/minetest/minetest/blob/master/doc/lua_api.txt#L3994
14:51 rdococ the thing is what about mods that change node_dig? or is that a bad idea to do in general?
14:51 Tre rdodoc i finished my mod!
14:51 rdococ yay!
14:51 MinetestBot [git] numberZero -> minetest/minetest: Fix inability to change metadata using stack:to_table() (#5547) 8350827 https://git.io/vSDU0 (2017-04-12T14:51:07Z)
14:51 Tre sort of
14:52 rdococ er
14:52 rdococ again, what I said earlier
14:52 DS-minetest rdococ: just do the default thing with the addition that you set the meta of the itemstack
14:53 rdococ wait, do I need to call node_dig, or create my own version of the code?
14:53 DS-minetest you could use node_dig but then you have to take away an item
14:53 DS-minetest but that would be not good since not always an item is addad
14:53 DS-minetest added*
14:54 DS-minetest i would say, make it on your own
14:55 rdococ It would help if I knew how, but okay
14:55 DS-minetest check for portection, remove the node, add an item to inventory
14:55 DS-minetest and wear tool
14:58 rdococ should I use inv:add_item?
14:58 DS-minetest i think yes
14:59 rdococ do I need inv:set_stack?

15:18 rdococ nvm
15:18 rdococ probabl
15:18 rdococ y
15:25 rdococ Good to know that digging a computer gives you 5 computers instead of 1.
15:25 rdococ ah

15:26 WSDguy2014 joined #minetest
15:33 rdococ what does itemstack:get_metadata() return if there is no metadata?
15:33 DS-minetest idk
15:33 rdococ probably "" or nil
15:33 DS-minetest do't use metadata
15:33 rdococ but it doesn't seem to work
15:33 DS-minetest use meta
15:33 DS-minetest don't*
15:33 rdococ I'm talking about itemstacks
15:33 rdococ not nodes
15:34 rdococ it says get_metadata() in the wiki
15:34 DS-minetest wiki is out of date
15:34 DS-minetest also itemstack meta is rather new
15:34 rdococ either way, the bug persists
15:35 DS-minetest past 0.4.15
15:36 rdococ does a node of the form {name="bla", param1=2} store metadata in it?
15:36 rdococ as in, can I do this: minetest.set_node(pos, {name="bla", metadata={fields={bla="bla"}}})
15:36 rdococ probably should try it but meh
15:37 DS-minetest minetest.get_meta(pos)
15:37 Pie-jacker875 joined #minetest
15:37 rdococ nvm...
15:37 DS-minetest local meta = minetest.get_meta(pos) meta:set_string("bla", "bli")
15:38 rdococ ik ik ik
15:38 rdococ okay
15:39 rdococ so the itemstack's metadata is set to (where meta is node meta) minetest.serialize(meta:to_table()), and when placed the node meta is set to minetest.deserialize(itemstack:get_meta())
15:39 rdococ but there's still a bug somewhere
15:40 DS-minetest u can use to_table but also from_table
15:40 DS-minetest and don't use metadata, it's deprecated
15:41 rdococ I'm still getting the same issue
15:42 rdococ attempt to call a nil value
15:42 rdococ it has a programs table it reads from
15:42 rdococ with functions in it
15:42 rdococ so that means that the node meta has no set "running"
15:43 Tux[Qyou] joined #minetest
15:43 DS-minetest set the node meta after placing
15:43 rdococ I do.
15:43 rdococ okyay, it kinda works now
15:43 rdococ except node placement is a bit wonky
15:44 rdococ doesn't seem to like snow layers
15:46 rdococ fixed that

17:38 AlexYst Also, the need for names isn't really that sudden. It's been set up this way for as long as I've known computers, probably longer than I've been alive. (And I'm coming up on three decades of age.)
17:45 rdococ those kinds of names are called IPs
17:47 rdococ also, what is a minetest mod doing in synaptic?

18:34 AlexYst rdococ: IP addresses aren't names, and they change. Typically, the name won't change unless you reinstall the system.
18:35 AlexYst Also, IP is Internet Protocol. IP *addresses* are the numbers you refer to.
18:36 AlexYst If I take my laptop to a foreign network, it'll have a different IP address.
18:36 AlexYst If I use my laptop on my home network on another day, it might have a different IP address.
18:36 AlexYst Having a constant name makes finding the laptop on the network much easier.

19:10 Krock since when do forums need tutorials of how to use them?
19:10 Krock and the FAQ explains the most things anyway
19:11 Krock but I agree that attachments may be a bit ticky
19:12 GreenDimond Since n00bz don't know how to do things and can't read an FAQ and also the FAQ has no pictures.
19:13 Tre true, screenshots can help the ppl who need visual confirmation
19:13 GreenDimond One guy I know (not saying any names) has zippo idea how to post pictures and did this:
19:13 Krock or record a youtube video, using nodepad to communicate to show how to use it /s
19:14 Krock minetest.register_alias("zippo", "zero")
19:14 GreenDimond ^yep.
19:15 Krock yeah, also seen such things
19:15 GreenDimond lol
19:15 GreenDimond The FAQ has 2-line explanations and for some things that just isn't enough :/
19:15 Krock "but the image is there, why can't you see it" <.<
19:16 GreenDimond >-<
19:17 GreenDimond Images help a lot though. I made a quick tutorial here for that guy: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=15099&start=125#p262943

19:42 kaeza_ GreenDimond: so, a faq for a faq?
19:42 GreenDimond ehm...no?
19:42 GreenDimond a more detailed FAQ for main things that the other FAQ does not explain well or explain at all
19:49 kaeza_ GreenDimond: i dont disapprove of the idea, but really, do you think these users will even read the topic?
19:50 GreenDimond If it is put somewhere in fontsize100 and in there face yes :) but really if it is just somewhere like linked on the front page or stickyed in the top of General Disc. then maybe
19:51 kaeza_ most of these users need to watch a video to know how to touch a wall with an apple
19:51 GreenDimond Aren't images enough? I *really* don't want to make a video :/
19:53 kaeza_ well, in any case im not on my usual device and dont have access to my account so ask VanessaE or sfan5
19:54 GreenDimond ask them for what? approval?
19:54 * kaeza_ is at iguaçu falls :D
19:54 GreenDimond (/disapproval)
19:54 GreenDimond ooo those are some nice falls
19:54 kaeza_ to stick it or something. You dont need approval to post
19:55 GreenDimond Well I haven't even made it yet xD

19:58 benrob0329 I could make a forum tutorial
19:59 GreenDimond I already volunteered.
19:59 benrob0329 (Video form)
19:59 GreenDimond We could do both :D
19:59 GreenDimond And I could post a link to the video on the page
20:00 GreenDimond benrob0329: How about this: I make the tutorial, you check what I put in it, and make a video tutorial on it.
20:00 benrob0329 Sounds good!
20:00 GreenDimond (and then I put vid link on page)
20:01 benrob0329 Ill do it when I get back from vacation.
20:01 GreenDimond I will start work on it today (I hope). Will get it done by next week at latest (again, I hope).

20:30 iisu Hi.
20:35 iisu rubenwardy: I forgot to mention that I'm using code from your food mod in get_sp() in my mod, though it's quite modified and serves for a different purpose (the code comes from food.item_eat() in your mod and now I use it to get player's satiation).
20:35 iisu https://github.com/rubenwardy/food/blob/master/food/init.lua https://github.com/iisu/minetest-easter-eggs/blob/master/init.lua
20:38 iisu Is it changed enough or should I change my licence to GPL and credit you? (I will give you a credit anyways, I'm just editing README.md.
20:39 iisu Also the code will change some more as I'm going to add support for some more mods but the concept remains unchanged.
20:39 iisu It's a small piece of code though.

21:16 Krock noo.. what are you even doing there? With a GIT client you'd have this done in one commit and under 40 seconds
21:17 Tre ok, duh *faceslap*

21:18 Krock github is helpful for quick one-file changes but if you want to do more - look out for a GIT client
21:18 Tre whats the best one you recommend?
