02:45 technomancy according to the lua_api.txt docs, putting ${foo} in a formspec makes it retrieve foo from node metadata and interpolate it

16:55 LinuxGuy2020 Hi guys I figured out how to run a dedicated server. However I would love to know how to keep it running in the background. When I manually start it in a terminal window then close the window, it stops the server. Whats the proper way to start the server?
16:55 LinuxGuy2020 On Linux Mint
16:55 LinuxGuy2020 I tried adding & to the end but that doesnt work apparently.
16:56 ElectronLibre Use the command line to run the server.
16:57 ElectronLibre Look for a binary file called "minetestserver", and its option. Then, launch `minetestserver <options> & disown` and you should be able to close the terminal window. If you want to keep it open, you can.
16:57 LinuxGuy2020 Yeah but when I do that it hogs the terminal. Nothing else can be done after it.
16:57 ElectronLibre s/option/options
16:58 ElectronLibre Try to use a pipe to redirect logs then.
17:00 LinuxGuy2020 ok
17:01 ElectronLibre I've got to go, if you have any questions I can ensure you that a lot of people will be able to answer them.
17:01 VanessaE tip: Ctrl-D to close the terminal after using & on a process.
17:01 VanessaE then you don't have to worry about the terminal killing the process on the way out.
17:01 ElectronLibre VanessaE, it's the equivalent of disown && exit.

18:55 xenkey Hi
18:56 xenkey I'm just wondering, what are the minimum requirements for a server?
18:56 xenkey I mean of course it will run on a 90s Jornada but what specs do I need to make the players... happy
18:57 Trixar_za Depends on the amount of players and how you optimize the the server
18:57 luizrpgluiz left #minetest
18:58 VanessaE xenkey: a low-end CPU in the 1-2 GHz range, 1-2 GB of RAM, a fast disk, a fast network pipe
18:58 VanessaE that's about all you need, and you can run a few light-weight servers on that.
18:58 xenkey Okay
18:58 xenkey If we go backwards; how many players will a 4 core 2.6GHz 1GB RAM Xeon hold?
18:59 xenkey Oh yeah it's gigabit too
18:59 asl97 minetest only use one core iirc
18:59 asl97 or did that change?
19:00 Krock xenkey, 1 GiB is not much.. maybe 3 or 4
19:00 xenkey I think there can be more than one emerge thread handling map generation
19:00 xenkey Krock: It's 1 or 0.5 :P
19:00 CWz my server has 2.33 pentium D, 1GB ram and 120GB HDD
19:00 asl97 xenkey: that cause buggy cave iirc
19:00 xenkey CWz: How many players do you have on a regular basis?
19:00 Trixar_za I've run a server on less
19:00 CWz 0
19:00 xenkey asl97: Not much of a problem imo
19:00 Krock xenkey, huh? The minetest server here only uses about 50 MiB RAM
19:01 Trixar_za Should be fine for about 10-40 players
19:01 xenkey Krock: Then how is 1GB not enough lol
19:01 asl97 xenkey: it depend on the world size and version of the minetestserver
19:02 asl97 if it's the old server which load every player files, 1gb wouldn't be enough iirc
19:02 Krock xenkey, my server has a minimalistic setup. It heavily depends on the active blocks settings and activated mods
19:02 xenkey I ran a server on a 4 core ARM box once and it reached the top of the server list (sort of), wondering if I should go again
19:02 Krock so how do you think it's 1 or just 0.5?
19:02 xenkey Krock: You'd have to put some effort into finding a server with only 50MB RAM
19:03 xenkey I have servers with 1GB and 512MB
19:03 Krock xenkey, minetest-server, not the complete server.
19:03 xenkey huh
19:03 asl97 krock said the server process use about 50 mib
19:04 Krock ^
19:04 xenkey yeah
19:04 xenkey <22Krock> so how do you think it's 1 or just 0.5?
19:04 xenkey With those I meant the RAM of my machines
19:04 xenkey Not my estimate on the usage
19:04 Krock ooh, I thought you were talking about the amount of servers
19:05 xenkey Oh another thing
19:05 xenkey It runs FreeBSD, is that an issue?
19:05 Krock It's an issue when you can't get a compiled version for it :P
19:05 asl97 ^
19:06 xenkey "Minetest has never been more secure"
19:07 Krock yay! Let's create a game with lots of security issues, then realease each month an even more secure version!
19:07 Krock *release

19:09 xenkey no
19:09 asl97 ssh lag, mosh is better but buggy at times
19:17 Calinou <VanessaE> only the paranoid insist on encrypting *everything* :P
19:17 Calinou I think we should encrypt all the things (no meme intended), because it's the only way stuff can be secure; without it, nothing is really secure
19:17 Calinou it is of course an ecological disaster, but better have that and save the world's privacy
19:19 VanessaE yeah but sometimes "secure" is useless
19:19 VanessaE why be "secure" with a publicly-searchable pastebin?
19:19 VanessaE now ont he other hand login credentials, bank stuff, and anything else that implies a private exchange should be encrypted for sure
19:19 Calinou I guess up1.ca is not indexed by search engines (and that's a good thing I'd say, pastebins should not be indexed unless author says so)
19:20 VanessaE (and the strongest encryption that's practical, too)
19:20 Calinou I wish lichess.org was encrypted, I can't stand my chess moves not being encrypted! :D

20:20 Cryterion I just went way the areas mod, sometimes need to help players understand the setup, but it works well
20:20 Cryterion BitX?
20:20 xenkey BitX.
20:21 Cryterion ??
20:21 xenkey Like bit (data unit) and X (executable)
20:21 asl97 name of the server i am guessing
20:21 asl97 xenkey: if you want help with starting it, i could help, although, no promise on maintaining it
20:21 xenkey Well yeah duh
20:21 xenkey Alriht
20:21 xenkey Two man staff team is a plus already
20:21 xenkey 2289 player info files
20:21 xenkey woah
20:22 Cryterion Yeah it is
20:22 Calinou call your server "BSD fan club"
20:22 xenkey lol
20:23 Cryterion If you using an old map, I'd say you would need to keep old player info

20:24 daswort Do we have a server system requirements thread in the forum?
20:24 xenkey ...
20:25 xenkey Now turn off your computer and go outside.
20:25 xenkey Now turn off your compNow turn off your computer and go outside. uter and go outside.
20:25 asl97 daswort: most computer can run a server well enough, uplink is the main thing
20:25 xenkey I don't have a computer
20:25 xenkey Good job this baby has gigabit
20:25 Krock ah no?
20:25 Krock and that's not a computer?
20:26 xenkey So before i go love
20:26 xenkey live
20:26 xenkey What mods should I add
20:26 Cryterion Most computers will, it's dependant on your inet connection speeds
20:26 Krock xenkey, boost_cart !
20:27 xenkey Uh how do I get a mod list
20:27 Calinou name_restrictions, very important
20:27 Calinou https://github.com/ShadowNinja/name_restrictions
20:27 asl97 xenkey: you should make sure you get all the mods you want in before starting, once started, the mod used is more or less set
20:27 Calinou Krock, pisto.horse
20:27 Calinou best domain I've seen yet
20:27 xenkey Ah thanks Calinou
20:28 Krock Calinou, great one :)
20:28 Calinou xenkey, and of course: More Blocks
20:28 Calinou and Map TOols
20:28 Calinou Map Tools*
20:29 xenkey Got that one
20:29 Cryterion I started my server off with the dreambuilder game, some mods added and some varied a bit
20:29 xenkey I got a modified maptools
20:29 daswort I know that a raspberrypi can run the binary of MT-server. But how much traffic, bandwidth and CPU power does one need for a server with mods and player. E.g. LibertyLands has Player and Mods but also a huge lag problem.
20:29 Krock mesecons, pipeworks, technic.
20:30 daswort See their graphs: http://grafana.ayntest.net/#/dashboard/file/minetest.json
20:30 asl97 my server bottleneck is the network
20:31 Cryterion you'll need a high speed inet connection, std ADSL is not fast enough
20:31 Krock best is a 1 GBit fiber connection
20:31 Cryterion Cryt-Servival runs on a VPS with an ISP and we still get lag
20:31 Calinou daswort, bandwidth: 0.1 Mb/s down+up per player
20:32 Calinou be sure to tune settings
20:32 Cryterion within*
20:32 asl joined #minetest
20:32 xenkey went from 30MB to 7.6MB
20:33 Cryterion your ISP might limit your bandwidth
20:33 xenkey they don't
20:33 asl97 Cryterion: you need to know if it's network lag or cpu lag
20:33 xenkey lol 7.0MB exactly
20:34 xenkey sounds good to me
20:35 daswort MB or MiB? xenkey
20:36 peetaur what would cause a client to hang when connecting saying "item definitions..."? It happens when my brother (win8) tries to connect to my server (linux) with lots of mods enabled, but doesn't happen if he runs the server locally (windows), or if I connect with other clients here (all linux), or if there are fewer mods enabled. It looks like here except our versions match 0.4.12 https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10844&
20:36 peetaur hilit=item+definitions
20:36 xenkey both
20:37 asl97 peetaur: just wait for it to load, the more mod the slower thee joining is
20:37 daswort xenkey, does not compute.
20:37 peetaur asl97: with n mods, it takes like 5s, and with n+1 mods, it takes many minutes
20:38 asl97 daswort: does it matter? it's only 24kib differents between 1mb and 1mib
20:38 daswort Does someone have some Traffic numbers of his/her server for me?
20:38 xenkey ...
20:38 peetaur asl97: with many mods plus load_mod_farming_plus = true, it is random whether it connects or not; with all mods enabled, he can never connect no matter how long he waits
20:38 asl97 peetaur: that is cause it need to download the textures, sound and other stuffs from the server that isn't already downloaded
20:39 daswort asl97, it alwaysâ„¢ matters. But not really no.
20:39 peetaur asl97: looking in iftop on linux, I could see him downloading things slowly ... 400 kB/s for a while, and then it stops completely after a while
20:40 asl97 then it enter the texture/mesh making step, disabling the preload stuff usally helps
20:40 asl97 usually*
20:40 peetaur would we see cpu usage during that point?
20:40 asl97 ether that or it lost connection
20:40 asl97 lol
20:40 xenkey i skinned the minetest game so much
20:40 xenkey no wool, dye, vessels
20:41 xenkey but we have moreblocks and darkage
20:41 asl97 you can always pass him all the mods and start a world with it so all the stuff would be cache
20:41 xenkey and i hope no crafting conflicts
20:41 asl97 on his client
20:41 xenkey or her
20:41 Krock vessels... who needs those? homedecor, what else?
20:41 peetaur asl97: well, one of our tests was for me to send him the whole world and mods, and he already did that
20:42 xenkey dont have homedecor
20:42 peetaur asl97: also, with load_mod_farming_plus enabled, it is random whether it works or not... he can have success one time, then failure the next
20:42 asl97 in that case, i blame windows xD
20:42 xenkey XP
20:42 xenkey you mean X{
20:42 xenkey XP
20:42 daswort xenkey, xdecore is nice and small.
20:42 xenkey Oo
20:42 xenkey I'd read the forums more often but
20:43 xenkey You know since we moved from PunBB IT'S BEEN IMPOSSIBLE
20:43 Krock Theory is when it doesn't work but you know why. Practice is when it works and you don't know why. When you use both, then it doesn't work and you don't know why.

20:46 boonscape3 Is Vanesse's server back on yet?
20:46 daswort xenkey, do you prefer this new forum software? (i forgot the name) → http://community.badvoltage.org/
20:47 xenkey no
20:47 xenkey I really liked PunBB
20:47 xenkey This one is too messy
20:47 Calinou PunBB was not responsive
20:47 Calinou use Discourse or NodeBB
20:47 xenkey Which mapgen version should I use
20:47 daswort I prefer fluxbb. And i really hope they release version 2 but hey, it is only 20.000 years!
20:47 Calinou that Bad Voltage thing is exactly Discourse
20:47 daswort oh right Discourse is the name.
20:48 boonscape3 I am waiting for vanessaE's creative server to come online
20:48 VanessaE it IS online
20:48 VanessaE I restarted it
20:48 VanessaE didn't you see the msg?
20:48 daswort oh wow: http://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8282

20:48 boonscape3 I saw it
20:49 xenkey Now fluxbb i like
20:49 asl97 xenkey: it depend on the mods you use
20:50 boonscape3 I may have left a message in the Mine DOT complaint box which was a thank you note intended for lolman
20:50 daswort http://discuss.flarum.org/
20:51 xenkey ugh
20:51 xenkey it won't write to debug.txt
20:53 boonscape3 I am having an issue where I would log in to VanessaE's creative server an the connection would drop causing the map not to load
20:53 asl97 xenkey: you are using minetest-skins?
20:53 xenkey no
20:53 boonscape3 Its whatever mods I get when I login to the server
20:53 VanessaE boonscape3: everyone has that problem
20:53 VanessaE you don't "get" any mods
20:54 VanessaE minetest keeps all mods on the server.
20:54 VanessaE it's a combination of a network bug and a player handling bug in the engine
20:54 xenkey https://sr.ht/d8fd.png
20:54 xenkey really
20:54 xenkey really though
20:54 VanessaE xenkey: cute
20:54 boonscape3 ok
20:54 xenkey VanessaE: this is the icon on the front page
20:54 VanessaE boonscape3: just keep trying and you will eventually get in
20:55 VanessaE xenkey: oh yes, I see it.
20:55 xenkey Yeah
20:55 boonscape3 Ok I got in but the connection just dropped on me again
20:55 xenkey I'll just go and update some mods then go live
20:55 asl97 xenkey: didn't you post http://psycho.space/p/6Ef2 ? minetest-skins is stated in it

21:03 asl97 it should be somewhere
21:03 asl97 you can pass a path for the debug.txt to the minetest command and try to reproduce the error again if you can't find it

21:06 asl97 there is no minetest.raillike_group
21:11 xenkey i just downloaded it
21:12 xenkey https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/blob/master/mods/default/nodes.lua#L1538
21:13 asl97 oh, your minetest version is outdated
21:13 asl97 that is the dev minetest_game
21:13 xenkey hooray
21:13 asl97 it was added on May 12
21:14 asl97 you need to use release minetest_game or dev minetest
21:15 xenkey Ugh

22:15 xenkey Hi
22:17 Jordach two months later, and forgetting that I still have a MT server
22:17 Jordach [23:17:30] <JD-Pub> Server has been running for 1423:44:05
22:18 xenkey lol
22:18 xenkey i play on it and still forget about its existence
22:22 * Jordach simulates some fluid
22:22 Jordach i have an experiment to test
22:23 Jordach YESS
22:23 Jordach it works :DDDDDDDDDDDDD
22:29 * xenkey also runs an experiment
22:35 xenkey http://pastie.org/10262282 does this look okay?
22:36 asl97 isn't it a new server without anything build yet?
22:36 xenkey yes
22:36 asl97 i wouldn't announce it so soon though
22:36 xenkey it doesn't show up in the list
22:36 asl97 oh
22:37 asl97 i though `server_announce = 1` put it on the server list?
22:38 xenkey apparently not
22:42 xenkey why do i always manage to break things
22:42 xenkey so it segfaults when i change a line
22:44 xenkey http://psycho.space/p/OWmW
22:51 xenkey any ideas why it's not showing up in the server list?

23:00 VanessaE Taoki: are they MineDOT compliant? :)
23:01 Taoki MineDOT?
23:01 VanessaE ask cheapie :D
23:01 VanessaE they don't appear to be ;)
23:01 xenkey bitx.pw is now running
23:01 Taoki Not something I heard of before, so probably not :) Unless that's some game... it should be because they adapt to any terrain
23:01 Taoki Ah
23:01 xenkey A nice 4 core 1GB RAM FreeBSD server with 50GB of disk, LevelDB world
23:02 xenkey Hope that didn't sound like me showing off
23:02 VanessaE Taoki: it's what cheapie calls his fictional road management firm on the servers :)
23:03 VanessaE DOT = Department of Transportation
23:03 Taoki Ah... nice :)
23:03 xenkey But it still won't report to the server list
