00:40 Inocudom VanessaE: bleak_fire_ should be able to just download this from the forum post, right?
00:40 bleak_fire_ i click on it and it asks me to register/log in
00:41 Inocudom You mean to the forums themselves? You will have to register to them then. Might want to register to them anyway. Could be useful.

02:07 gnatt Is the goal of minetest to become an opensource clone of minecraft or just to make something similar?
02:11 Wuzzy gnatt: 2nd.
02:11 Wuzzy Actually, Minetest is mainly an engine now.
02:13 Wuzzy some people tried to make games for Minetest which are more similar to Minecraft, but so far, they are all still quite far away from Minecraft when it comes to actual gameplay.
02:15 * Brains suspects that is because it becomes more fun to fiddle with various bits instead of chasing the clone.
02:15 gnatt There is no red stone, right?
02:16 Brains I think mesecons is supposed to be the redstone equivalent.
02:16 Brains (Though not all the way there yet.)
02:17 gnatt So is minetest trying to be very minimal and rely on mods like mesecons to add that, or would mesecons ever be bundled into minetest
02:17 roboman2444 joined #minetest
02:19 Brains I believe the view is that minetest should be an engine and that that kind of functionality would be in a mod.
02:20 Brains I suppose technically minetest doesn't even come with a game if you grab it from git..  (Packaged builds usually include a couple of games as a concession to the newbiees.)
02:20 Brains -e
02:23 gnatt So what's the goal of minetest? To try to replace minecraft for the average consumer or just be something neat to tinker with?
02:23 gnatt Hope that doesn't come off the wrong way, just heard about minetest today and curious
02:25 compunerd joined #minetest
02:25 * Brains would hazard to guess that the answer is both and more.  With a flexible engine and a community of mods, there is no reason why ex-Minecrafters couldn't be happy right along side the tinkerers and the folks making new games.
02:25 roboman2444 joined #minetest
02:25 Wuzzy joined #minetest
02:25 fireglow I'd say more of a tinker-thing.
02:26 fireglow Gameplay wise, minetest isn't a replacement for minecraft, too many things are missing
02:26 fireglow oder under-done
02:26 Brains Minetest isn't even a game without, well, games / mods.
02:27 gnatt Brians, yeah that was misleading. I think I get that now. minetest.net mentions minetest the engine and minetest the game, minetest_name
02:28 Brains gnatt: Folks were getting confused by the fact that the engine wasn't enough to do anything with so a minimal game was bundled in...  Just enough to get things running and maybe play around with.  All the cool stuff is in the various games/mods.
02:29 * Brains usually plays on a local server running the dreambuilder game.  Carbone, technic, and a number of others are pretty popular too.
02:29 * Brains may be somewhat distracted as he's bouncing a cranky server.
02:30 gnatt Might be the wrong place for this, but the dropdown menus on minetest.net are almost impossible on win 8.1 chrome
02:32 Brains Not sure who maintains that, actually.

17:31 Calinou now you wonder why Google likes it so much :P
17:32 est31 lol
17:35 est31 what are the closed blobs inside coreboot?
17:36 est31 it was a fsf endorsed project one day
17:36 est31 once*
17:36 est31 how can they endorse sth like that?
17:37 Calinou it no longer is :P
17:37 Calinou they probably weren't aware
17:37 Calinou blobs required to make the system function in general… I don't know precisely
17:38 est31 why do they all hate github
17:39 est31 github is far cooler than sf.net
17:41 Calinou GitHub is still proprietary
17:41 Calinou use Gitorious
17:41 Calinou (GitLab.com also is proprietary, FWIW.)
17:43 Elinvention joined #minetest
17:43 est31 when gitorious doesn't run on my computer, I still can't change it as I wish, what have I gained?
17:43 Calinou but you have the ability to install it yourself
17:44 est31 why do I want that?
17:44 Calinou in case Gitorious turns to shit?
17:44 Calinou or it closes
17:44 Calinou that's possible for any Git platform
17:44 Calinou if GitHub were to do that, you have no solutions
17:45 est31 then we can develop one
17:45 est31 or move
17:45 est31 but until then a FOSS platform is dangerous
17:45 est31 it allows to create proprietary software for free
17:45 est31 do you want to support that?
17:46 Calinou there are many self-hosted Git servers, but few of them have official instances
17:46 Calinou <est31> it allows to create proprietary software for free
17:46 Calinou how so?
17:46 Calinou program output should not be covered by license
17:46 est31 I mean, you can download gitorious, and install it on your server. thats free
17:47 est31 but with github you have to pay
17:47 Calinou yes, and you have to give full source code to anyone who accesses it.
17:47 Calinou (AGPL)
17:47 sfan5 partially incorrect
17:47 est31 and that automatically supports foss software development
17:47 Calinou GitHub lets you make proprietary software as long as it is public
17:47 Calinou you can just add no license
17:47 sfan5 est31: you can't have github on your own server
17:47 sfan5 only github (for) enterprise(s)
17:47 sfan5 which isn't exactly the same as normal github
17:48 est31 thats true. why would I want if it already supports my open source project?
17:48 ThatGraemeGuy because maybe you want to host something that shouldn't be public
17:48 Calinou because GitHub may eventually 1) make changes you don't like, 2) go down, 3) go paid for everyone…
17:48 Calinou the list is infinitely long
17:48 Calinou also private projects that are really private.
17:49 Vargos joined #minetest
17:49 est31 ofc, but then you aren't the only one experiencing this, I mean most github users are developers, the'll code 10 alternatives in 2 months
17:50 Calinou it's harder than you think :)
17:50 Calinou and you might want to run the exact same software for compatibility

19:50 * Jordach crams more caffiene down LazyJ's throat
19:50 Jordach who needs sleep :P
19:51 LazyJ Make it a quad-shot of espresso, Jordach.
19:51 tim_flatus can you get a mod for it? zzzzz
19:51 Jordach LazyJ, i can't drink coffee anymeore
19:52 Jordach in the next few minutes, you will experience the true meaning of hell: migraines
19:53 LazyJ That's unfortunate, Jordach. When I can enjoy coffee for the beverage, I can make a smooth and mellow brew in a French press.
19:53 Jordach LazyJ, i moved my dodgy as hell VM server to a VPS
19:53 Jordach mmm dat 100% uptime since 11am this morning
19:54 * tim_flatus goes to install more_caffeine
19:54 LazyJ Be wary of the 2015_02_10 GitHub release. VanessaE's servers had an issue with the network update in that day's commits.
19:55 LazyJ Earlier she installed a pull request that fixed the issue, but the pr hasn't been moved into the master branch yet.
19:56 Jordach LazyJ, even thinking about coffee gave me a headache
19:57 LazyJ Heh. I know what you mean about the caffeine withdrawl headaches.
19:58 Jordach LazyJ, i'd usually go through 3 double shot esspressos in a day
19:58 LazyJ I pace myself with a cup or two of water between mugs.
20:00 LazyJ I worked the graveyard shift for a few years. We got tired of the acrid stuff bought from the warehouse.
20:00 LazyJ So me and another fellow (his girlfriend was a barrista) started to learn how to make better coffee.
20:01 * tim_flatus actually thinks organic coffee is easier on  the system
20:01 rubenwardy > Coffee
20:01 tim_flatus I know that's a kind of unpopular view these days
20:01 rubenwardy Rank.
20:01 rubenwardy Tea is for the cool kids
20:01 LazyJ We started with flavored coffees and then learned to craft custom brews in French presses and moka pots.
20:01 * Calinou doesn't drink coffee
20:01 Calinou yet he developed More Blocks!
20:01 rubenwardy #YayBritannia
20:02 * Jordach has had to settle for tea
20:02 shadowzone I love coffee.
20:02 shadowzone I just don't drink it much
20:02 LazyJ We switched things up with teas too.
20:03 Jordach while at my course, the internet had completely failed on a twin fibre line yet my internet radio stream kept going even several minutes in
20:03 LazyJ Don't ever brew tea in a glass French press. The lack of oils caused the plungers mesh to snag and ruined it.
20:03 tim_flatus There is a reason why the french call them cafetieres
20:04 tim_flatus Tea should be made in a warm tea pot
20:04 LazyJ The moka pot is my favorite method of brewing, but it takes a bit more care.
20:04 tim_flatus Hot water poured ON the leaces
20:04 tim_flatus leaves
20:05 Jordach tim_flatus, my method in testing tea is to head into the tea / coffee aisle and randomly choose one box of special leaves
20:05 Jordach eg, red bush, green etc
20:05 tim_flatus Can't stand it myself, but at least I know how to brew tea
20:06 tim_flatus Actually I do make an exception for good quality green tea

21:47 tim_flatus Is there any way of creating aliases purely for images?
21:48 tim_flatus I think the answer is 'no'
21:52 Elinvention left #minetest
21:52 tim_flatus But it would be useful to have this confirmed before I open a FR on the engine
21:56 est31 what do you need them for?
21:57 tim_flatus To support 3rd party mods that rely on the way minetest_game is organised
21:57 tim_flatus I reorganised default
21:58 tim_flatus I can (and will) create fake default_book, default_mese_block and default_obsidian images
21:58 tim_flatus But that seems really messy

22:56 Megaf_ folks, if I change my current world's mapgen from v6 to v5 to generate some new land using the v5 and then back to the v6, will anything get destroyed or it will only affect things that are not yet generated?
22:57 Megaf_ Hi LazyJ
22:57 est31 Megaf_, it will only affect new areas
22:58 LazyJ Howdy, Megaf ;)
22:58 Megaf_ brilliant
22:58 Megaf_ thanks
22:58 LazyJ Test it first.
