07:55 Kalabasa Hmm
07:56 Kalabasa When setting directly (self.property = value), it changes the value but the engine doesn't respect it.
07:56 Kalabasa Then I used set_properties
07:56 Kalabasa which worked
07:56 Kalabasa However self.property still contains the oldvalue

17:01 rubenwardy Gameplay wise, that is probably correct.
17:01 rubenwardy The default vanilla game isn't good
17:01 rubenwardy And installing mods doesn't give a feeling of polish.

17:08 reber I have difficulties to make mods work all toghether. Is there a package with all common mods somewhere ?  Or maybe a list of common mods that works with latest minetest ?
17:09 Calinou reber, Mod Releases forum… stay away from WIP Mods forum
17:09 Calinou there is no common mod package, although you can use subgames
17:10 reber Calinou, with of games would you advise to use ?
17:10 w_laenger my mods are at the WIP forum >:
17:10 reber http://wiki.minetest.net/Game  <--- here ?
17:10 Calinou reber, Carbone :P although it's a bit out of date
17:10 reber ok perfect thanks i'm gonna give it a try

17:12 sfan5 yay it still works
17:12 reber sfan5, that's the link i gave ;)
17:13 reber besides carbone with one is cool next ?
17:14 w_laenger i'm making a new mod for teleporting airships
17:15 w_laenger and it already works
17:15 w_laenger there is already a train mod
17:17 rubenwardy http://wiki.minetest.net/Subgames, not http://wiki.minetest.net/Game (game redirects to subgame)
17:17 w_laenger it's my first mod which uses 2 voxelmanipulation at once
17:19 Kalabasa Is it better to use VoxelManipulator when reading (no writing) lots of nodes?
17:19 sfan5 !wiki Subgames
17:19 MinetestBot "Minetest subgames (also called “games”) are essentially a pre-tested collection of Mods." - http://wiki.minetest.net/Subgames
17:19 sfan5 those are the same rubenwardy
17:19 rubenwardy Game redirects to Subgames
17:20 w_laenger As far as I know it's faster than get_node and add_node if you use it on mass
17:20 Routh VanessaE: I noticed in saplings.lua you have birch, spruce, fir anf jungle tree defined with _ongen variants. Is it possible to just add definitions for the other saplings found in moretrees there if I want to use them as _ongen? Like Willows and Rubber Trees, etc?
17:21 reber is it possible to install games to ~/ home dir  instead of minetest/games ?
17:21 w_laenger yes
17:21 reber ~/.minetest/games maybe ?
17:21 w_laenger you just need to link them
17:21 reber ok ;)
17:21 w_laenger (or maybe change a setting at minetest.conf)
17:22 Calinou yes, you should install them in homedir
17:22 Routh @reber you can use the --world flag
17:22 Calinou not in your installation folder
17:22 Kalabasa hm
17:23 w_laenger the current code http://paste.ubuntu.com/9999156/
17:23 reber Calinou, hehe i just understood it's your game ? :) in ~/.minetest/games maybe ?
17:23 w_laenger fairly useless
17:23 Calinou yes
17:24 w_laenger but it autodetects them instead of waiting for you to set we positions
17:24 w_laenger do what you want with the code
17:26 Routh Anyone know of a way to display the current biome you're in for troubleshooting?
17:27 Kalabasa So I can read nodes through VoxelManip:get_data()
17:28 Thenextlevel joined #minetest
17:29 Kalabasa Will the array from vm:get_data() update when the map changes?
17:29 Kalabasa Or do I have to call get_data() everytime
17:29 jin_xi Routh: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/minetest/minetest/master/doc/lua_api.txt see mapgen object biomemap
17:30 Routh Thanks jin_xi1
17:30 Routh Thanks jin_xi!
17:31 VanessaE Routh: all of the saplings have an _ongen variant already.
17:32 Routh @VanessaE Ahh, thanks. I thought otherwise when I only saw the 4 defined in saplings.lua
17:32 VanessaE most of them are defined in a loop
17:33 Routh I see the loop now
17:33 Routh Derp
17:33 Routh "Read the code..."
17:33 Routh That if statement.
17:33 Routh Hmm
17:34 * Routh looks up ~=
17:35 Routh That's what I thought.
17:35 Routh so why the seperate defs for those 4 saplings VanessaE
17:35 Routh ?
17:35 Routh Just the file naming convention?
17:36 VanessaE I don't remember now why I did it that way
17:36 Routh Looks like the difference is the _biome.surface
17:38 Routh Those 4 are moretrees.[tree_biome].surface, the others are moretrees[tree_biome].surface
17:38 Routh It's the .
17:38 Routh :P
17:38 Routh Hmm, that could be done with an else statement.
17:39 Calinou Neolink, has snow biomes, deserts, plains, forests
17:39 Calinou one more biome than minetest_game (snow)
17:39 reber Calinou, carbon looks cool. Any other games that you would advise ?
17:40 Calinou no idea :/
17:40 VanessaE mine of course ;)
17:40 VanessaE Neolink: don't use mapgen v7 :P
17:41 Routh Mapgen v7 is so pretty, once you learn the biome API
17:41 Routh I'm getting there.
17:41 Routh Not for the faint of code though.
17:42 VanessaE Routh: Oh I see what it was.  it's because I call an in-mod grow_function instead of directly spawning a tree by its model def
17:42 VanessaE (those in-mod grow functions construct custom, randomized models)
17:42 Routh Ahh
17:43 Routh Gotcha
17:43 Calinou there is simplev7 mod for having some biomes, Routh
17:43 Routh Thats why the trees are so interesting.
17:43 Calinou also paragenv7
17:43 VanessaE Neolink: sorry :(  but you can use worldedit to save your house and some some minor editing of your world config you can switch to v6, then blow away the map file and start over
17:43 VanessaE then re-import your house
17:44 reber VanessaE, link maybe ?
17:44 Routh @Calinou yes, I haven't seen simplev7.. but most of the v7 mods I've ecountered defined their own blocks and I'm writing one that uses just the default blocks for mod compatibility.
17:44 VanessaE https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=572
17:44 reber thnx :)
17:45 VanessaE Calinou: you shouldn't encourage use of mgv7 at all. hmmmm has been threatening to tear the whole biome system apart lately
17:45 Calinou meh
17:45 Calinou we have three quality mapgens waiting to be used
17:45 Calinou I'd like to see more servers using non-v6 mapgen
17:45 VanessaE I know
17:45 Calinou be it a Lua mod or v5/v7
17:46 Calinou we could supply a Lua mapgen with the default game, too, for demonstration
17:47 VanessaE Neolink: yes, but don't.
17:47 VanessaE you'll only see one or two biomes there as well
17:47 VanessaE (DB has the same biome settubgs as minetest_game)
17:47 VanessaE settings*
17:50 Routh I know v7 is discouraged, but I'm liking it for now. If hmmmm wants to tear the system apart I'll stick with the commit before the changes until I update my server code. The only thing I've noticed is the dungeon generation is horrible predicable, I can draw a perfect grid on my map of where they pop up. However I think defining some noise to their spawn will fix that.. if that's possible.
17:50 hmmmm the biome system is the thing being torn apart, not the mapgen
17:51 hmmmm the map generation algorithm itself has recently undergone some major changes so it would undoubtably be different from previous versions
17:51 hmmmm not so with v6
17:51 hmmmm with v6 you're guararanteed consistency
17:51 Routh hmmmm: correct, so my custom defined biome code will need updating when you complete the changes, and that I'm fine with.
17:52 Routh I'll just have to do an update freeze at some point.
17:52 VanessaE yeah but if you tear apart the biome system, those mods that make biomes work will break, which in turn renders mgv7 back to all-stone, that's why I was discouraging their and its use
17:53 Routh What's the endgoal of the teardown, hmmmm?
17:53 Calinou why would the biome system go away?

21:32 olddog60 I think I am ... that's what's so frustrating. Separate ports, diff minetest.conf, diff everything ... but thanks any way Vanessa
21:33 olddog60 i run each in it's own linux screen
21:33 VanessaE what ports are you using?
21:34 olddog60 i tried diff. ones. Currently 30000, 30001, 30005
21:34 est31 can you paste the precise error to pastebin.com?
21:34 VanessaE and what exactly do you mean by "gives errors"?
21:34 olddog60 I go to pastebin.com to post screen errors?
21:35 VanessaE paste your debug.txt from the server that errors out.
21:35 VanessaE well, past the last 20 or so lines anyway
21:35 VanessaE paste*
21:35 est31 do you mean the virtual console screen or the irrlicht rendered screen?
21:36 olddog60 5: Bind failed: Address already in use
21:36 olddog60 i can give more detailed error msg if needed ...
21:36 est31 are you on linux?
21:36 VanessaE ok that I've never had happen before
21:36 olddog60 yes and each server is running in a screen -S  type of thing
21:37 est31 do lsof | grep and then the port
21:38 olddog60 i did lsof | grep 30003    nothing on screen after that
21:38 olddog60 maybe it's something with my provider.

21:39 olddog60 once in a great while, I can get 3 running, seems no logic
21:39 est31 is it in your local network?
21:39 olddog60 no it's a dedicated pc i rent
21:39 olddog60 i am considering just buying another IP addy
21:39 est31 directly on the internet no nat and so on
21:40 olddog60 sorry bit dumb on that issue. First time for me. It's rental of a physical server, one IP addy
21:40 est31 ok
21:41 est31 try to do it with one of the ports of the other servers. is the error the same?
21:42 olddog60 the problem seems I start one server (whatever port), the 2nd (new port) but the 3rd gives me problems. No matter what order I start them and each in their own screen -S
21:42 VanessaE wait, are you using redis for the database?
21:42 olddog60 just defaults running scripts for each server .. that's all i know
21:42 VanessaE ok
21:43 olddog60 it's not that big of a deal, I can just go with 2 servers
21:43 olddog60 we have enough public server already ;)
21:43 est31 can you paste the full error?
21:43 VanessaE dang it I remember someone saying something about ports and map database being finicky at 30003 or some such
21:44 olddog60 yes, let me paste error or last part of it ... it's in  loop to restart in event of crash.. one minute please

21:45 olddog60 sorry
21:45 olddog60 got cut off too i see
21:45 olddog60 i just go to pastbin.com?
21:45 VanessaE that'll ork

21:50 est31 yes
21:50 olddog60 http://pastebin.com/UVcjaX06
21:50 est31 what port was it
21:50 olddog60 i changed it to 30005
21:50 olddog60 so i have 30000, 30001 also
21:51 est31 lsof | grep 30005 is empty?
21:51 est31 it can take a time while its running
21:51 est31 dont abort it
21:51 olddog60 ok i had it in a loop, will change script
21:52 Wayward_One does anyone know what could be causing minetest to hang again? i have more than enough memory, and it's the only application besides hexchat that i have open, yet it hangs so frequently that i can't play it anymore
21:52 est31 nono the lsof command
21:52 VanessaE Wayward_One: run it through a debugger?
21:53 VanessaE I think you're hitting the same issue that MichaelEh is getting
21:53 Wayward_One hmm
21:55 olddog60 30005 seems empty. Last night I did get all 3 running by changing the start order but it seems sporatic how it works.
21:56 Wayward_One great, looks like it's callgrind time again...
21:56 olddog60 I think I can run with just 2 going. I appreciate all the help here :)
21:56 VanessaE olddog60: sounds to me like you're trying to start more than one of the same instance at the same time then.
21:57 olddog60 can you explain more please? sorry
21:57 Wayward_One VanessaE: it's starting to seem like that might be the case, i'm running a month old build and it's working fine
21:57 VanessaE trying to run two instances on the same port - one starts, then the other starts but fails.
21:57 est31 bisect it
21:57 olddog60 I'm very new to linux also
21:58 olddog60 each mintest.conf has diff ports set
21:58 VanessaE Wayward_One: MichaelEh tried going all the way back to 0.4.10 after the failures he had with recent builds and suddenly those don't work either.
21:58 est31 try to run it with --port
21:58 Wayward_One hmm...
21:58 est31 manually
21:58 VanessaE olddog60: that doesn't mean you're not accidentally running your keepalive script twice
21:58 VanessaE (for the same port/instnace)
21:58 VanessaE instance*
21:59 olddog60 ok
21:59 Wayward_One est31, meaning " ./minetest --port" ?
21:59 est31 yea
21:59 Wayward_One ok
21:59 est31 Wayward_One: not you
21:59 est31 meant olddog60
22:00 Wayward_One ah, ok lol
22:00 olddog60 yes, ty

22:02 est31 olddog60: did it work?
22:03 olddog60 i'm redoing the 3 scripts to include the ports and no loop
22:04 olddog60 do i comment out the port then in .conf files?
22:04 est31 you can comment it out
22:04 olddog60 ok ty, will test
22:06 Tg1 joined #minetest
22:09 olddog60 it shouldn't matter which order i start the servers in the diff screen -S right?
22:09 VanessaE no
22:09 est31 no
22:09 olddog60 ok ty
22:11 olddog60 ok I used ports 30005, 10, 15 with no loops in script... YES!!! (sorry for caps)
22:12 olddog60 only thing I can see is I commented out the port in the conf and put it into the command line --port
22:12 olddog60 why it works now, no idea but thank you all :)
22:13 VanessaE didn't I say to include --port ? :)
22:14 olddog60 yes and i did do that before
22:14 olddog60 but i never commented it out in the conf. So i'm not sure what diff that makes.
22:14 VanessaE oops :)
22:14 olddog60 I still have some doubts but for now it's working.
22:14 VanessaE bbl
22:14 olddog60 ty vanessa and est31
22:15 olddog60 maybe restarting all 3 made the diff..

22:51 Wayward_One touch-and-gos?
22:52 est31 yes
22:53 Wayward_One A touch-and-go "involves landing on a runway and taking off again without coming to a full stop. Usually the pilot then circles the airport in a defined pattern known as a circuit and repeats the maneuver. This allows many landings to be practiced in a short time."
