00:00 Jordach lucky
00:00 OldCoder Not sleeping on the floor any longer. I will blog that shortly.
00:00 Jordach things have turned for the better today
00:00 OldCoder Oh?

00:15 Jordach ugh, hot laptop leg syndrome
00:17 sokomine iqual: that was what top said
00:18 iqualfragile have you found the reason?
00:19 iqualfragile if you are on ubuntu it might be the update of the xapian index for the software center
00:20 sokomine no, not really. but unlike the previous build that was about a week older this one does behave more nicely...the computer becomes unresponsive, but at least killing can still be done (somtimes even by successfully waiting for the esc-menu to show up eventually). before that, i had to resort to magic sysrequest to get control back

00:23 Jordach use #minetest
00:23 sokomine i'm there as well...or was there before i had to shutdown the client again
00:23 Exio ew
00:23 Jordach silly Exio
00:24 sokomine exio: that's bad :-) then you won't be able to talk to a certain percentage of the community/modders/developers in their native language :-)
00:24 Jordach we might as well as give PilzAdam the rights to minetest anyways
00:24 Exio sokomine: c55 is finnish
00:24 sokomine hm. hope it's not that bad and you'll all get along
00:24 Jordach yes, i've had enough of the fighting
00:25 PilzAdam Jordach, wut?
00:25 Exio that doesn't mean i need to learn finnish to talk with him correctly
00:25 sokomine even if users like me complain sometimes...the game *did* make huge progress in the last month
00:25 Jordach actually, come to think of it, theres a hidden problem
00:25 Exio and english isn't even my native language, :P
00:25 Jordach and i know why
00:25 sokomine exio: thank god. i don't know finnish either
00:25 Jordach its been hidden since may 2012
00:25 sokomine what's yours then?
00:25 PilzAdam Exio, what is your native language?
00:25 Exio spanish
00:26 Exio i'm from argentina, near to kaeza :P
00:26 sokomine ah. thought kaeza started a channel for spanish speaking people as well
00:26 PilzAdam I know someone who knows someone who knows someone who can speak a little bit spanish too!
00:26 Exio xD
00:26 Exio sokomine: i know
00:26 Jordach fuck. that. shit.
00:26 Exio i'm in that channel :P
00:27 sokomine ah, fine
00:27 PilzAdam Jordach, May 2012... wasnt that the time where the API was almost done and the development kinda stopped for some time?
00:27 Jordach PilzAdam, wrong.
00:28 Jordach lkjoel was the FIRST TO LEAVE FROM THE "EVIL DEVS."
00:28 Jordach and that has been hiding within the community since.
00:28 PilzAdam Jordach, well, he wanted to rewrite Minetest in Java IIRC
00:28 Exio what
00:28 iqualfragile wut?
00:29 Exio the fuck?
00:29 Jordach PilzAdam, wrong.
00:29 PilzAdam wasnt he the lead dev of blockplante AKA Minetest++?
00:29 Jordach he was banned from -dev for just asking a simple question
00:29 PilzAdam *Blockplanet
00:30 PilzAdam Jordach, and what question?
00:30 Jordach it was a real fix for speed hacking
00:30 Jordach not just a hack
00:30 Jordach that's the first domino to fall
00:30 PilzAdam wheres the log?
00:31 Jordach i aint digging it up
00:31 Jordach not when its 1am
00:31 PilzAdam well, I need to read it myself to judge it
00:31 PilzAdam but I know that #minetest-dev was more strict in the past
00:33 iqualfragile Jordach: its 2:30 around here :)
00:33 Exio 21:30~

09:47 kaeza there :)
09:48 [0gb_us] That's not client-side image changing.
09:48 deasanta ah - referring to texture of block - such as an LCD display
09:48 kaeza [0gb_us], so?
09:48 kaeza I'm providing an alternative
09:48 [0gb_us] So it's not what was asked.
09:49 [0gb_us] It doesn't help with the problem, the problem didn't involve player textures.
09:49 deasanta i want to know if i can change the png displayed on a node client side only to reduce lag
09:49 [0gb_us] It's an alternative problem, not an alternative solution.

09:58 Calinou lag isn't slow performance, by the way
09:58 Calinou you can use texture packs to change textures client side
09:58 Calinou but you need to know the texture name
09:59 deasanta tnx to all :)
09:59 kaeza the solution would be to install the mods locally, and copy the textures into a texture dir
10:00 kaeza (or bug the server owner to host a remote media server/whatever that is called)
10:02 Calinou you can do that on dropbox :P
10:02 markveidemanis Hi
10:02 Calinou no need to host your own remote media server

10:04 arsdragonfly VanessaE:you said it takes minutes to join your server due to UDP?
10:04 arsdragonfly then will hosting a remote media server solve the problem?
10:06 kaeza it's only good when you join for the first time (or there are new mods)

10:33 webdesigner97 status is the name of command
10:33 kaeza "foo" is the name of the player invoking the command
10:33 kaeza and "" is the param
10:33 webdesigner97 ah, ok

10:46 john_minetest Locked locks would be cool. So everybody has to unlock his locks on the master lock so the owner of the master lock can unlock the master lock. :D
10:46 kaeza john_minetest, xzibit approves
10:46 VanessaE markveidemanis: the whole point of a locked item is to keep others from modifying it; locked signs have been around since July of last year, we're just looking at adding 3d versions to homedecor to go along with the regular ones.

10:53 VanessaE xiong: 0.4.6 is okay.  You really should use a nightly build or a "latest git build" for your OS e.g. one of pilzadam's or sfan5's or mine.
10:54 Jordach joined #minetest
10:54 xiong Ah, thanks; I'm sure you understand my viewpoint.
10:54 kaeza fun fact: latest git is no more stable than "stable" version
10:54 kaeza (or actually, the other way around)
10:54 VanessaE kaeza: and generally no *less* stable to be fair :-)
10:55 kaeza of course :)
10:55 VanessaE xiong: of course.  Most people avoid "latest git" or similar for some projects because of the idea that it's unstable.  That usually isn't the case here. :-)
10:55 VanessaE but it is bleeding edge, so expect the occasional paper cut :D
10:56 xiong Yes well. I'm very new with this, I won't know the difference between a bug and something I haven't yet figured out.

10:57 PilzAdam Hello everyone!

11:12 xiong I'm looking at a web page, though. I need an apt line.
11:12 arsdragonfly apt-get install minetest will give you 0.3.1
11:12 arsdragonfly :-(
11:12 VanessaE I don't make i386 builds because I don't actually know how
11:12 xiong arsdragonfly? I think that depends entirely on what sources I have chosen.
11:12 VanessaE xiong: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:minetestdevs/daily-builds; sudo apt-get install minetestc55
11:13 PilzAdam + sudo apt-get update
11:13 VanessaE well, apt-get update also of course.
11:13 arsdragonfly xiong :the default repo
11:13 VanessaE bah, ninja'd.
11:13 PilzAdam I actually do this too currently, to check if the new recipe works :-)
11:13 arsdragonfly VanessaE :consult PilzAdam for cross-compiling :-)
11:14 VanessaE arsdragonfly: he cross-compiles to windows, not linux :)
11:14 xiong Well, I don't think this is something I want, anyway, yes. I already have something better.
11:14 arsdragonfly that's how he made windows builds i'm afraid?
11:14 markveidemanis I am looking for a way to get a chat service going

11:14 arsdragonfly oh yes I mean cross-architecture

11:58 xiong It should be staring me in the face, right on that page. I don't know why I don't see it. Maybe because it's 5 am.
11:59 VanessaE xiong: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:minetestdevs/stable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install minetestc55
11:59 VanessaE that's the stable repo.
11:59 xiong Thank you.
11:59 VanessaE and it's horribly outdated now.
11:59 xiong Good. I like old.
12:03 xiong Nope, that's not it, sorry.
12:03 markveidemanis Help...
12:04 VanessaE that's all we have for linux I'm afraid - the outdated one (0.3.x), stable (which is 0.4.6) or daily builds (which is practically 0.4.7 by now)
12:04 xiong I have added to that 'precise main', needed for a complete apt line.
12:04 markveidemanis I want to use socket to host a python server which people can connect to and send messages along, the server will respond by sending the message to the address provided
12:04 markveidemanis was kicked by VanessaE: STOP GOING OFF TOPIC!
12:05 xiong 'precise1 main' -- not it.
12:05 VanessaE xiong: why don't you just run the command I gave you?
12:05 VanessaE that's the stable repository as linked from the minetest.net Downloads page
12:06 xiong That's a shell command, or rather, three of them. I'm sure you know this.
12:06 VanessaE of course.
12:07 VanessaE and that's the officially supported way to install the PPA.
12:08 xiong Might we both, as intelligent beings, meet levelly in the world of discourse? I would like to know the correct apt line of the stable PPA. Really. No more, no less. I have skills, not unlimited; and I don't want to bore anybody with a longwinded justification of my reasoning, important only to me.
12:08 xiong I don't know everything, don't pretend to do so.
12:08 VanessaE ...
12:09 Koren omg
12:09 xiong But http://ppa.launchpad.net/minetestdevs/stable/ precise main
12:09 xiong ... is not it.

12:10 xiong Or, perhaps, it is exactly correct and some weirdo issue is interfering; in which case I apologize.
12:11 VanessaE when you said it's "not it", what precisely is wrong?
12:11 xiong Not locating that resource. Look, if you sincerely think that's the full, complete, correct apt line, then please accept my apology. I'll continue to try to troubleshoot my end.
12:13 xiong I'm getting a 404.
12:13 VanessaE beats me if it's right, but it looks correct.

16:28 kaeza Hi
16:30 Calinou bump mapping is called bump mapping when it accounts for light directions
16:30 Calinou else, it is /detail mapping/
16:30 Calinou like OA does
16:30 Jordach FUCK
16:30 * Jordach never knew right click sampled colour in blender image editor
16:30 RealBadAngel light is hardcoded atm
16:30 RealBadAngel since we dont have hardware lights yet
16:30 Jordach kaeza, i could fix my model in a day
16:30 Jordach :P
16:31 RealBadAngel Calinou, that what are you talkin about are specular maps
16:31 Calinou no
16:31 RealBadAngel lights. bump mapping is exactly what you can see on those pictures
16:31 Calinou how about googling
16:31 Calinou and seeing what other games do
16:31 iqualfragile no, specmaps are about shining
16:31 Calinou and asking game devs
16:32 iqualfragile bumpmaps influences shadows, too
16:32 Calinou so = detail mapping
16:32 RealBadAngel maybe.
16:32 RealBadAngel but since theres no hardware light it will look just this way
16:33 RealBadAngel when it will be aviable, makin this work will be as easy as pass light source coords to shader just
16:34 iqualfragile can you try enabling hardware light?
16:35 Jordach phase 1:  UV Remap
16:35 Calinou iqualfragile: needs a lighting recode
16:35 Calinou and is slower

18:24 Calinou lacrosseplayer: on phoronix benchmarks it seems to do well
18:24 arsdragonfly the one who said that this game " runs playably on a laptop with Intel 945GM graphics." must be a super optimist :P
18:24 Calinou but some guy on phoronix forums said the performance sucked
18:24 Calinou arsdragonfly: yes, radeonSI is that slow
18:24 Calinou he just doesn't have catalyst
18:24 Calinou arsdragonfly: and it does
18:24 Calinou intel's linux drivers are decent in terms of perf
18:24 lacrosseplayer I'm not going to install any drivers onto this because I'm going to put this USB's files onto my cousins absoultely shit PC
18:25 Exio enjoy your 4FPS then
18:25 Calinou even nouveau brings me 20 FPS
18:25 Calinou (570)
18:25 lacrosseplayer I don't mind xD
18:25 arsdragonfly lacrosseplayer :liveUSB?
18:26 lacrosseplayer Yes
18:26 arsdragonfly there should be an option about preserving data across reboots
18:26 lacrosseplayer I'm just waiting to install Lubuntu that I have prepared on this USB to my friends computer
18:27 lacrosseplayer Then I will put on drivers
18:27 arsdragonfly if you didn't set that,i think everything you downloaded will be lost after a reboot
18:28 arsdragonfly or maybe i'm wrong
18:28 lacrosseplayer I put on data preserving
18:28 lacrosseplayer So no need to worry about that

18:31 lacrosseplayer Bye guys gotta go
18:32 iqualfragile i actualy get quite good fps with nouveau
18:33 Exio good fps =?
18:33 PilzAdam 12
18:33 Exio 42*
18:33 RealBadAngel like something more than zero propably ;)
18:34 PilzAdam with valgrind 5 FPS is super fast
18:34 Exio with valgrind having a FPS is fast
18:34 Exio you normally have SPF ;P
18:34 Jordach xonotic ftw
18:34 Exio redeclipse
18:35 iqualfragile Exio: about 30
18:35 iqualfragile but i have limited it to 30 so i cant be realy precise there
18:35 Exio iqualfragile: what gpu?
18:35 iqualfragile 9600 gt
18:35 PilzAdam I actually notice a difference between 30 and 60
18:36 PilzAdam 60 just feels a bit better
18:36 Exio i don't notice the difference with more than 80~ FPS
18:36 Exio smoother movement :D
18:38 kaeza joined #minetest
18:43 kahrl PilzAdam: I notice that difference too
18:44 kahrl I assume it has to do with drawtime jitter. 30FPS doesn't mean each frame takes 1/30 seconds to render
18:45 iqualfragile that might be true
18:45 iqualfragile kahrl: --> #minetest-de
18:46 Exio what does drawtime jitter mean?
18:46 Exio the time rendering the stuff?
18:46 kahrl some frames take more time, some take less to render
18:47 kahrl FPS is only an average
18:47 Exio ah
