13:33 IhrFussel Hello guys...is it normal that my root server already uses swap even though the memory usage is below 15% ?
13:34 Mr_Pardison depends on your swap setting.
13:36 IhrFussel The swappiness is 60
13:38 IhrFussel Total RAM is 11 GB, in use 574 MB, cached 10 GB
13:38 Mr_Pardison I'm not completely sure but that probably isn't normal.
13:38 shivajiva that's a lot of cache
13:39 nerzhul It's normal
13:39 nerzhul if you server is a VM set vm.swappiness=10
13:39 nerzhul 10GB cache means the OS has 10GB disk data in memory
13:40 nerzhul it can be anything on disk, it depend on the recent usage, disk cache is always used and you should always have it else you will kill your disks :p
13:41 shivajiva The disk cache will grow until you have no free memory left...
13:41 shivajiva When you need more memory, some blocks will be evicted from the disk cache to make room. This eviction is controlled by a policy designed to maximize efficiency. E.g. "LRU": evict the Least Recently Used block.
13:45 IhrFussel The only big file on my root server is map.sqlite ... all other files are mainly a few KBs
13:46 nerzhul IhrFussel, anything can be in disk cache, binaries, logs ...

13:51 Mr_Pardison So, I have a question about how to change the key that activates and deactivates the woodcutter mod function where it cuts down the tree.
13:51 Mr_Pardison I'm trying to change it since the default key used is sneak and that is used for other stuff.
13:52 Mr_Pardison I have isolated the areas that I need to change to lines 294-332
13:52 Mr_Pardison this is in the init.lua file.
13:54 Megaf cache and buffers are good IhrFussel
13:54 Megaf also, using swap is ok, it's just the kernel puting htere stuff that doesnt need to be in RAM
13:55 Mr_Pardison here is the code segment I'm talking about:
13:55 Mr_Pardison https://thepasteb.in/p/Q1hBPVk9lMzi8
13:55 Megaf IhrFussel:
13:55 Megaf total used free shared buff/cache available
13:55 Megaf Mem: 3936 787 1443 39 1706 3052
13:55 Megaf Swap: 10238 0 10238
13:56 ThomasMonroe o/ Mr_Pardison, Megaf
13:56 Megaf Greetings ThomasMonroe :)
13:56 Mr_Pardison \o ThomasMonroe
13:56 ThomasMonroe how are you two doing?
13:56 IhrFussel Megaf, swap is a few MB and I wonder what exactly is in there
13:56 IhrFussel I mean swap in use
13:57 Mr_Pardison rather well and happy that I got accepted into a college that I applied to. Puzzling over how to change the activation key for the woodcutter mod.
13:58 ThomasMonroe :) thats good, and good luck XD
13:58 Megaf Thomas-S: SHould I worry about this?
13:58 Megaf <ERROR> 2018-01-08 07:20:30: [Server] Item "streets:rw_asphalt_solid" not
13:58 Megaf defined at position (-381,8,486)
14:00 Thomas-S As long as you don't have the streets_compatibility mod installed, there will be lots of similiar error messages. There is no need for worry, it's simply an unkown node.
14:00 IhrFussel Is that an unknown node? I think the position has been added to those (not sure if that got backported to 0.4.17 though)
14:01 IhrFussel Here is my swap line of free -m: Swap: 3899 4 3895 ... so why exactly is it using 4 MB swap when there is 10 GB memory available?
14:01 Megaf IhrFussel: I explained that already
14:02 IhrFussel So it's likely just kernel functions?
14:02 Megaf just stuff that dont need to be in RAM
14:03 Megaf total used free shared buff/cache available
14:03 Megaf Mem: 3685 1547 43 22 2095 2063
14:03 Megaf Swap: 0 0 0
14:03 Megaf my laptop ^
14:07 IhrFussel But your laptop also doesn't use swap and my PC (Ubuntu) doesn't either right now ... a bit confusing
14:07 Megaf I dont have swap
14:08 IhrFussel Oh yeah right... well I'll see how it behaves after rebooting (set swappiness to 10)
14:12 Megaf Yep, I can't play Minetest anymore
14:13 Megaf it just hangs my whole system and I have to hard reset
14:13 Megaf since 0.4.16
14:14 Mr_Pardison RIP
14:14 Megaf 4GB of RAM is nowhere enough to run Minetest
14:15 Mr_Pardison that's enough for me with only MTG running on Fedora.

14:17 IhrFussel It depends on what your server loads...a simple client with no mods just MTG should max require 50 MB RAM ... a lightweight server maybe 200, a more heavy one (like mine) 700-800 MB ... do you use LOTS of nodes on your server? Mine has 1,700 nodes

20:48 Fixer so quite
20:50 IhrFussel Nobody replied to https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19310 yet ... it's pretty critical
20:50 Fixer https://twitter.com/apolloFER/status/949778078775029760
20:51 IhrFussel That function indeed seems to allow breaking even nodes that are supposed to be unbreakable by definition
20:51 IhrFussel Or condition*
20:51 rubenwardy I had this issue on CTF
20:51 Shara Have seen the issue before
20:52 Shara Problem is, you'd have falling nodes float on top of things you can't usually build on top of otherwise.
20:52 Shara Which is also kind of bad
20:52 Shara I actually had issues with my handholds mod because of this and had to work out a way around it
20:52 rubenwardy replied
20:53 IhrFussel But why does the "hit" node have to drop itself?
20:53 Shara What else should happen to it?
20:53 sfan5 IhrFussel: probably because it's not on the bugtracker
20:53 sfan5 if they believe this to be a fairly important issue they should make sure the devs see it
20:53 rubenwardy swear I made an issue about this
20:53 Shara Either the existing node is replaced (so it's dropped or lost) or you let falling nodes float magically on top of things you can't usually build on
20:54 Shara I never made an issue because I can't see a good solution
20:54 rubenwardy #4781
20:54 ShadowBot https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/4781 -- Falling nodes can be used to break protected blocks.
20:54 rubenwardy part of the problem
20:55 IhrFussel Respecting certain node grups sounds very good
20:55 IhrFussel groups*
20:55 Shara Have the falling node cease to exist if the node it would occupy is protected and not air?
20:55 rubenwardy maybe drop as item?
20:55 Shara Hmm, maybe
20:56 rubenwardy can a player make nodes in a protected area start falling?
20:56 rubenwardy yes actually, if they dig beneath
20:56 Shara I've only ever seen it used to grief twice in over two years on RC either way
20:58 Shara But maybe the falling node dropping as an item would be best if the landing place is protected
20:58 IhrFussel sfan5, that's why I posted it here...to inform you about its existence since I'm not the author
20:58 Shara Ugh, now I am tempted to stare at the code
20:58 rubenwardy yay
20:58 rubenwardy Shara offered to fix it!
20:59 sfan5 nice
20:59 Shara Lol
20:59 Shara Yay, sfan5 thinks me coding is nice!
20:59 sfan5 if you fix the issue and don't break anything else in the process, I don't see why not
21:00 Shara Since falling code appears to be in lua, I could at least give it a try.
21:00 IhrFussel Also how serious is this "cheat"? https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19351
21:00 Fixer Microsoft’s Spectre-fixer bricks some AMD PCs
21:00 Shara But if I need to compile anything I will sob and cry because windows
21:01 rubenwardy affects serverlist ranking, IhrFussel
21:01 Shara I really should teach myself to cross compile already
21:01 rubenwardy so not particularly serious
21:01 IhrFussel I know that but...bad enough to require fixing?
21:01 rubenwardy probably not
21:02 IhrFussel The user also questions the existence of that bonus for older servers while I see a good reason (so that old servers are never THAT forgotten on the list)
21:02 Shara "...why giving a bonus for a old server?" Because old servers proved they actually last some time
21:02 rubenwardy ^
21:02 Fixer "high quality players"
21:02 Shara It's so annoying to join a server, build something.. come back next day and no more server
21:03 * Shara should probably post that there not here
21:03 IhrFussel Many just do something before thinking about it... on one day they want to offer a server, the next day they regret their decision and shut it down
21:04 IhrFussel Mostly when they realize what kind of work it takes to maintain a good server
21:05 lumberJ joined #minetest-hub
21:06 Shara Replied anyway
21:07 IhrFussel I mean there are a few good reasons to shut a server down (no money, job too hard, illness, losing interest and maybe more)
21:07 Shara Well, it's also fine to shut it down because you don't feel like it anymore, but of course it isn't so great for players
21:07 Megaf Shara: well said in the server age topic
21:08 Shara Hi Megaf
21:08 RobbieF joined #minetest-hub
21:08 IhrFussel Shara, "be" missing xP
21:08 Megaf Speaking of that, I still ahve to adjust my servers age. it's not really accurate yet
21:08 Megaf I think I'm off by almost one year
21:08 Shara Fussel, fixed thanks
21:09 Mr_Pardison joined #minetest-hub
21:10 Shara I posted on the forum two days in a row. What's happening?
21:10 rubenwardy woah :O
21:10 IhrFussel I don't think servers get many bonus points for being old ... AFAIK the max is 4 points @ 8 months
21:10 rubenwardy yeah, it's capped
21:10 * Megaf pours a glass of red wine to go with this bread with butter
21:11 Megaf while watching BBCs Planet Earth II
21:11 * Mr_Pardison hands Megaf a jar of jam
21:11 Mr_Pardison ooohhh.... I really want to watch that.
21:11 Shara Anyway, rubenwardy / sfan5: would dropping the falling node as an item if it lands somewhere protected be a solution you'd support?
21:12 Megaf Mr_Pardison: wathing the first episode now, just amazing
21:12 sfan5 Shara: it sucks if a player lets stuff fall in his own protected area but sure
21:13 Shara obviously if it's your own area you should be able to drop it as a node
21:13 Mr_Pardison griefers are the problem with that.
21:13 Shara though then you get weird inconsistent behavior depending on who owns an area... but that could be okay for this perhaps?
21:13 Shara Mr P, yea, a way to counter using falling nodes to grief from above an area is what we're talking about ;)
21:14 Mr_Pardison I can definitely get behind that.
21:17 IhrFussel There is still the general problem that you can make any node drop by letting a falling one fall on it ... that's what made my player light nodes drop before I changed them to invisible light sources
21:18 IhrFussel That problem isn't just in protected areas... players can obtain nodes they shouldn't get normally
21:18 Shara Make 'any' node drop?
21:18 Shara How?
21:19 IhrFussel If you let a san node fall on any other node (that's not buildable_to AFAIK) the hit node will drop
21:19 IhrFussel sand*
21:20 IhrFussel Let me recheck
21:21 IhrFussel Okay...seems like the falling node needs to be a certain one (didn't work with sand)
21:21 Shara Ys, so not any node. That soundsed kind of weird :P
21:22 rubenwardy you can use that exploit on ctf flags, btw
21:22 rubenwardy as I posted in the topic
21:22 Mr_Pardison Shara seems to be having the same problem that Megaf and I were having earlier.
21:23 Shara ?
21:23 Mr_Pardison your keyboard cannot handle the speed at which you type.
21:23 Fixer i remember snow falling on protected areas destroying some stuff like rails, that is quite old unaddressed problem
21:23 Shara Oh, it just can't handle the cat on it
21:24 * Mr_Pardison hopes that cat is a Scottish Fold
21:24 IhrFussel rubenwardy, do you know by any chance which nodes work for the dropping? I tried steelblock, meselamp and water sources so far
21:24 Shara No. She's probably part rex though.
21:25 rubenwardy ?
21:25 rubenwardy they need to be walkable = false
21:25 rubenwardy so try ladders, plants, torches, etc
21:28 IhrFussel Yep works with any rail
21:29 IhrFussel Maybe we could make it so that if the hit node is walkable = false then drop the falling one instead?
21:30 rubenwardy it shouldn't destroy the node if it's not diggable
21:30 rubenwardy so it should check that it has at least one digging group
21:30 IhrFussel But there is the group unbreakable too
21:35 Megaf falling nodes shouldnt destroy nodes, period
21:37 IhrFussel I think in most cases it would really make more sense to let the falling node drop instead of the hit one ... sounds more logical to me
21:38 Megaf or just let the falling node stay on top of the node it has fallen on
21:39 Megaf as it was placed there
21:39 IhrFussel Megaf, that already happens but isn't possible when the hit node is walkable
21:39 Megaf I think this was the olde bahviour
21:39 Fixer they do
21:39 Megaf from my feet to my head
21:40 Megaf all red
21:40 Fixer it is especially problematic for protector_redo
21:41 Megaf Im not even mad, it was amazing
21:41 Fixer your skin will pile off
21:41 Megaf likely
21:41 IhrFussel Any node with walkable = true (rails, ladders, torches etc) can be dropped when you let a falling node fall on it which is a very good way of griefing but enables more than that (obtain unbreakable nodes you should never get in the game)
21:42 Fixer i hate sunburns
21:42 Megaf ok, server has been running great on my new dedicated, time to wipe it off from my VPS
21:42 Fixer they also are quite nasty, even if you are in the shadow near the water

21:43 Megaf Destroying container private area: /vz/private/102
21:43 Megaf Container private area was destroyed
21:43 Megaf oh boy
21:43 Megaf it's gone
21:43 Megaf Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
21:43 Megaf /dev/sda 20G 6.7G 13G 36% /
21:43 Megaf so much available space now
21:45 Fixer NOBODY HERE
21:45 Fixer Megaf: do meltdown tests

21:45 Megaf nah
21:45 Megaf I'm on holidays now
21:45 * Fixer slaps Megaf with very large fish on holiday
21:45 Megaf and when they end, I have plans already
21:46 Megaf will work on a new photoshoot
21:46 Megaf maybe it will be called, "Colours You Don't See"
21:46 Fixer infra red?
21:47 Mr-Pardison microwave?
21:51 Fixer fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
21:51 Fixer or not
21:52 Fixer pc will probably lock up during compile
21:52 Mr-Pardison RIP
21:52 Fixer it is fine
21:52 Megaf Done, requested downsizing of my Linode
21:52 Megaf to the 5 USD plan, Linode 1GB
21:52 Megaf and back to 20 GB of SSD
21:53 sofar 5$ per?
21:53 Megaf sofar: 1 Xeon core, 1 GB for RAM, 20 SSD
21:53 sofar $time_unit
21:53 Megaf https://www.linode.com/pricing
21:53 sofar so, hour?

21:55 IhrFussel I can really just recommend my new hoster netcup...I have a great server performance for $15/month
21:56 Fixer minetest ASIO went into hibernation it seems
21:56 Megaf I like the idea of having a dedicated IhrFussel
21:56 Megaf oh boy, I'm not going to the sun tomorrow
21:57 Fixer he is quite dedicated
21:57 Megaf maybe I go to the sun today
21:57 rubenwardy I'm enjoying kimsufi, although its file I/O isn't great
21:57 rubenwardy as it is HDD
21:57 IhrFussel My server is pretty much "dedicated" ... I have guaranteed cores and have yet to complain about someone who stole my CPU time
21:57 rubenwardy not SSD or RAID
21:58 Megaf rubenwardy: they should do collocation
21:58 Fixer rubenwardy: you can put database to RAMdisk
21:58 Megaf A Raspberry Pi 3 would be more powerful than my current Atom there, and it'd use way less energy
21:59 rubenwardy ah, *colocation
21:59 rubenwardy was wondering what you meant

22:05 IhrFussel Look at those values, not comparable to the 222-secs lag VPS or my old dedi https://pastebin.com/A54fW43e ... those are just the non-perfect minutes
22:05 Megaf I had 8 seconds lag today
22:05 Megaf but it was likely becausae of logic gates
22:07 sofar I wonder how much AWS hosting of a MT server would actually cost after the free trial ends
22:07 Megaf Closing IRC so I can play Minetest. Yest, Minetest does takes that much RAM. Cya guys,
22:07 sofar looks like 8$ a month if you burn 100% cpu

22:14 paramat so it's likely not MT's fault
