Time Nick Message 01:41 oiaohm Ok if someone mentions cart collisions there are a few mods that spawn carts and if they had collisions without players in them that spawn feature would stuff up perfectly. Now being on a boat it is kind of annoying that the player collisions box does not expand. A feature I class as missing is that a item like a boat that you are using does not alter collision box of player. 01:43 oiaohm And that collision box alteration would mean that narrow passes(1 node wide) would have to use swimming instead of lucking it and hoping not to get stuck.. 01:45 oiaohm Has anyone ever made a flatpak of minetest 01:45 rubenwardy yes, https://github.com/est31/minetest-flatpak 01:45 rubenwardy https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?t=15336 03:12 oiaohm rubenwardy: thanks that will be a good starting point. At some point I want to make it so I can flatpak build the development branch. Having the stable gives me starting point. 07:38 Hijiri If someone was going to implement dimensions then how would that work 07:39 Hijiri obviously they would need to do it incrementally, but how would they get approval for those incremental changes if it's not clear that they will follow through on the rest? 07:39 Hijiri doing all the work at once in a separate branch is not really an option due to the massive rebase that would be required since it would touch all the code 08:13 jonah hi 18:52 paramat game#2108 18:52 ShadowBot https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/issues/2108 -- Biomes: Remove some warm and humid biomes at altitude by paramat 18:54 paramat and game#2091 both ready 18:54 ShadowBot https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/issues/2091 -- Add 'spawn' mod to spawn new players in suitable starting biomes by paramat 19:24 rubenwardy interesting website by Github talking about how other projects do FOSS: https://opensource.guide/ 19:25 rubenwardy this too: http://opensourcesurvey.org/2017/ 19:30 paramat "Fig1. - Problems encountered in open source" hehe does sound like MT 19:32 rubenwardy yeah 19:32 rubenwardy the first link talks about how to fix those 19:32 paramat well some of those are partly inevitable in FOSS 19:33 paramat due to the inevitably large ratio of contributors to dev time 19:34 rubenwardy I don't think they are 19:34 rubenwardy don't be defeatest 19:34 paramat wow the gender imbalance is shocking 19:34 rubenwardy Yeah 19:34 rubenwardy look at the bit about what things are important to contributors 19:35 rubenwardy code of conducts are more important to women by about 10% 19:36 rubenwardy https://i.rubenwardy.com/sdiEr.png 19:40 rubenwardy re contributors/devs: https://opensource.guide/assets/images/building-community/contributor_funnel_mikemcquaid.png 19:43 paramat sorry , i didn't mean that to sound defeatest, but i can see it can read that way with the 'well ..' 19:44 Shara I don't really see the gender imbalance as being that large. (It is large in terms of who actually contributes of course) 19:46 paramat for example 'unresponsiveness' is partly due to lack of dev time, but of course is a big and valid problem 19:47 Fixer oh nice 19:47 Fixer please read it 19:47 paramat i wonder how they measured gender imbalance, i assume they are counting core devs 19:47 rubenwardy survey of contributors 19:48 rubenwardy they contacted random github users essentially 19:48 paramat ah 19:48 rubenwardy they being github - the survey is by them 19:48 Shara Both genders seemed to think all the points were important either way. And it could just be that women are more likely to mark surveys with more extreme values :) 19:49 rubenwardy yeah 19:49 Fixer "Setting positive expectations of behavior, and addressing negative incidents quickly, can improve contributor retention and collaboration." 19:49 Fixer we will include automation and mobs in MTG within 5 years 19:49 Fixer you are welcome 19:50 Fixer "21% of people who experienced or witnessed a negative behavior said they stopped contributing to a project because of it" 19:50 paramat (?) 19:51 sofar how is it shocking? 19:52 sofar ehm maybe my perspective is off ... Intel has been hammering for years to do better in this space 19:52 paramat i expected it to be a big difference but wasn't expecting 95% to 3% 19:53 Fixer "When someone new lands on your project, thank them for their interest!" 19:54 Fixer "Be responsive. If you don’t respond to their issue for a month, chances are, they’ve already forgotten about your project." 19:54 sofar it's entirely logical that the gap is immense 19:54 rubenwardy yeah, those are the two big things I got out of it ^^ 19:55 sofar there's an excess in available technical training amongst men, it's only logical that the amount of developers doing OSS are dominated by males 19:55 sofar this is what you get when you disproportionally team boys STEM and not girls 19:55 Fixer i like this https://opensource.guide/ site 19:56 rubenwardy it's seen as a male thing, so women are put off for multiple reasons. Just a society problem 19:56 Fixer also very provocative tactic that may save MTG https://felixge.de/2013/03/11/the-pull-request-hack.html 19:56 Shara Yup. I was actively discouraged from studying sciences by my own teachers at school. Even intentionally excluded from something quite important due to my gender. It happens. 19:56 rubenwardy same reason there's less nurses and liberal arts 19:56 sofar I'm actually surprised about how small the gender gap is in some aspects of the survey 19:56 Fixer actually women was into computers in XX century a lot 19:57 Shara Also it's not like I've not recieved insults and certain types of behaviour from people within MT due to my gender. 19:58 Shara I'm just good at not giving a damn about what such people think :) (and sadly many women would run away due to it... I've seen it happen) 19:59 paramat Fixer 'pull request hack' not for MTG, it's not abandoned 20:00 Fixer paramat: but you and few more contributors clearly don't have time for full scale development 20:00 rubenwardy it's sad how idiots can ruin it for people 20:01 Fixer rubenwardy: idiots are people too 20:01 sofar even women can be idiots 20:03 sofar it's one thing to say that there is a gender gap, it's another thing to say that it's men who are responsible for it 20:03 paramat Fixer, that's not suitable for MTG. new core devs have to be chosen carefully. maybe for a new game though it could work 20:03 Fixer i would rather shift more into luring more people into engine/mtg dev 20:03 sofar ... it's only men that ... 20:04 rubenwardy there can be more than one reason, you know 20:04 sofar to illustrate, some black people were against abolishing slavery in the american civil war conflict 20:05 sofar fixing the gender gap in STEM is going to take decades 20:06 Fixer why we even discuss this? it is not like we discriminate women/men/etc in minetest 20:06 sofar sometimes it's good to understand the underlying problems and their scale? 20:23 sfan5 re contributors/devs: https://opensource.guide/assets/images/building-community/contributor_funnel_mikemcquaid.png 20:23 sfan5 >mikemcquaid 20:24 sfan5 interesting that a guy like this wants to lecture people on how to run FOSS projects 20:24 rubenwardy !g mikemcquaid 20:24 ShadowBot rubenwardy: Mike McQuaid | The home page for a software engineer named ... - The home page for a software engineer named Mike McQuaid. , McQuade - The New York Times — Who gets to write that. Doing so will both make your software worse and make you burn out." 22:17 Fixer depends on PR 22:23 paramat in fact, that 'owe you nothing' page is excellent 22:25 paramat however of course, through our kindness, we do much more than we are obligated to :} 22:27 Fixer it needs balance 22:28 Fixer if you are way into "owe you nothing", people will turn away from project 22:29 paramat yes it shouldn't be expressed unpleasantly of course 23:46 paramat will merge game#2107 in 5 mins 23:46 ShadowBot https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/issues/2107 -- Ore distribution: Deeper iron, diamond and mese block, tune gold by paramat 23:51 paramat merging 23:54 paramat done
